Lumia 920 Thread

Does anybody know if this speaker dock will work?
Look like it connects with BT, but now sure if it would be compatible with the 920.

Q
Also is there any quick way to get to a contact to call/contact - currently seems to take 3/4 step process? (i think people/search/type/select),
Any way to autolink contacts? (facebook contact and phonebook contact need to manually linked it seems)

This is the one thing I really miss from my Android phone. WP8 doesn't have a predictive dialler built in. The best app I've seen so far is RapDialer. But even that's not perfect - it only shows history of outgoing calls. No history of incoming calls. So if you need to respond to a missed call you still need to have the built in phone app pinned to your start screen.

Thanks signates, just a day ago I was thinking that I missed the predictive text when searching the contact list, RapDialer now installed :-)

Hello guys,

I wanted to find out how you guys rate the build quality / sturdiness of the 920? My grandfather wants to get one, but he works in an engineering environment and his phones are prone to the accidental fall every so often.

Naturally I recommended a cover needs to be kept on the phone at all times, but how tough would you say the Lumia is?

(Side note- he wants a Nokia as he has always owned them and never had issues. Brand loyalty and all that).

Build quality is excellent.
I dont know if i dont have the same phone the guy on the internet has who cannot scratch the screen, but mine has 2 large scratches already, and I am super careful with it.

I have read of quite a few people having cracked screens from very low falls, I have yet to drop mine so cant really comment

See the previous page

But the screen is probably no more sensitive than the 8X or Galaxy S3

Thanks signates, Rapdialer app is a lifesaver!

Not sure how easy it is to get a cover specific to 920 (there are some that will fit).
a screen protector seems to be a must, but not sure where to get one.
body is designed like a rock, but supposedly if it drops flat on the screen (which is slightly raized) it can crack, so try get one.

Say what ? I get one to two days if I am really lucky.

The 6 days I achieved when only switching on WiFi when I need it. I also only made about 20min worth of calls, send and receive about 15 e-mails.

I was in an accident yesterday and was on the phone a lot. It only lasted just over a day.

To come back to topic, the 920 had it's first restart on Sunday morning. It has to be charged every night, sometimes during the day as well. My wife is a heavy user.

920 Cover

Anyone found a local retailer that has a 920 specific cover, or at least screen protector?

I do know that close to the FF camera, is the proximity sensor (switches screen off when on a call and close to your head), and this must not be covered otherwise screen randomly switches off/ dust can also cause an issue with it.

Pjjdp - battery saver is very useful for getting more out of battery - though live tiles are disabled and have to manually sync everything. Can also try switch to only 2G signal -or at least not LTE - as is said to use more battery than 3G.

Battery life sometimes can go down quickly if showing/taking imagery/pics/video - the back of the phone near camera gets warm - meaning battery is draining fast.

I have been to every retail cellphone shop and small repair shops in Centurion and nobody has covers.
Some of the guys even ask how do I have the phone because "it is not out yet"?!?!?
Tried a few shops around my work in Rivonia and got the same reply.

You will have to ship from Hong Kong. Have done this a many a times and very good quality.

Cheers

I got a back cover when i got the phone at cellucity in Somerset west for R150. Only came in last week.

How much mobile data are you guys using?

I seem to have gone through 2.5gigs since I got my phone last week. It seems a bit excessive as I only downloaded a few apps, 3 email accounts syncing, Skype online, don't tweet or facebook. I dont consume much online content such as videos or music.

I have setup my skydrive but have not taken pics or videos to sync to skydrive.

Another thing I miss from the Nokia Store on my N8 is the option to pay for apps from airtime on my phone. On the windows store I need to use my credit/cheque card.

I also don't understand why I have to download a 3rd party app to download video/audio from websites. The streaming works but I want the option to download the video/audio from within IE in order to be able to replay at a later stage instead of having to stream the content everytime I want to view it. It becomes frustrating if you found a cool video and you end up having to stream it 10 times when you showing it to 10 different people. Not sure how the cache works on videos on the 920.

I haven't yet found a decent free video download app that allows for downloading via wifi or mobile data.

Skype online

Are you sure that you are not consuming a lot of data?

Perhaps the answer to this is from your favourite "Typical Fanboy that suffers from lack of comprehension skills and is insulting my own intelligence" in your view and past statements by offering the possible answer to your question.
All these audio/video controls are there to control piracy by using DRM (Digital Media Rights), whether this is wrong or right we leave that for another discussion.
So there you are Sir:)

DRM can be coded into the file without limiting the ability to download non DRM media. I frequent a vew websites that have video and on my N8, the video saves to my phone in order for me to view offline at a late stage.

As an example, browsing a website (not YouTube) and they have a non DRM .avi/.mp4 file, it's impossible in WP8 to click on the link, continue browsing the web and watch the video at a later stage.

This functionality does nothing to prevent piracy and if MS wanted to really prevent piracy of DRM content they would not allow devs to develope apps that bypasses their limitations in IE.

Skype is logged in with a live tile on the home screen. Have not skyped anyone yet.

The 10 times streaming was an example I used. I have watched a few minutes of online video. Streaming does not give me the details of the size of the file that I am viewing so it is possible that my 10 minutes of video was in HD and the file size was a couple of hundred megs. Another reason why I would prefer to download my content to my phone as I can see in the download progress bar the file size and abort if I think its too big.

I'm not sure why you can't do this. It seems like a basic need, and the phone definitely supports it (based on the fact that you can plug your phone in and copy videos to it like a flashdrive). And you won't find an app that can do this either as there is no way to interact with the videos hub (no API). The most an app could do is save it to it's own storage, but then you would need to watch the video inside that app everytime.

But to address your 2.5GB - that's insanely high. I use about 1/2 GB per month and I use it ALOT. I don't often download apps, but I use Twitter/FB, lots of emailing and browsing etc.
Have you connected your FB etc? First time you do that it downloads all your contacts and their avatars - but unless you have a bazillion friends it wouldn't use that much.
