Lumia 920 Thread

And advise on battery longevity?

On battery saver ,and letting the phone be a dumb phone, it last ages.
As soon as I turn whatapp on, browse for a bit on internet, battery discharges very quickly (20% in less than an hour)
and the back of the phone above camera gets very warm.
(also occurs when taking pic, or doing quite a bit of photo editing)

Is there any tips, tricks, to extend battery and still have a smart phone besides running around with a charger?

Or do we have to wait for new firmware?

Battery tests on GSMARENA only give it a rating of 5H40 for internet browsing, and 6H20 for movie watching, (fine for phone calls at 9H) which is not nearly as good as iphone 5 or Galaxy S3. HTC 8X seems to have similar battery life - so prob a function of WP8?

Hello guys,

I wanted to find out how you guys rate the build quality / sturdiness of the 920? My grandfather wants to get one, but he works in an engineering environment and his phones are prone to the accidental fall every so often.

Naturally I recommended a cover needs to be kept on the phone at all times, but how tough would you say the Lumia is?

(Side note- he wants a Nokia as he has always owned them and never had issues. Brand loyalty and all that).

Take a look at http://m.wpcentral.com/nokia-lumia-920-and-samsung-galaxy-s3-face-against-fastball-who-strikes-out

Insane video of the L920 vs SIII.

After nearly dropping my Lumia 920 I am desperately trying to find a case/cover for it locally. Any had any luck finding one?

Done playing around with the phone and settling my usage patterns.

WiFi on always, location services on, 4 email accounts syncing, mobile data permanently off, i get about 30 hours from fully charged to empty. Only had 2 reboots since i got the phone.

Say what ? I get one to two days if I am really lucky.

I get almost one day out of my S3. It comes off the charger around 7am or so. Usually by 6 or 7pm, it's dead.

Reason I'm posting here, I'm considering the Lumia as a replacement or perhaps second phone. Has anyone done this move? S3 to Lumia? If so what has been your experience particularly with battery life?

My usage is as follows:
Receive around 30-40 emails per day, only reply to one or two with the phone

Around 20 min of Web browsing and a lite Facebook

Maybe a total of 30 min chatting with Whatsapp

Make around a half hours worth of calls a day

Use the Gps navigation once in a while for say 30 min

My question, will the Lumia give me better battery life? Does Whatsapp work properly on this phone now?

Thanks.

Just remember that it takes a few charge cycles (read weeks) before a phone battery starts functioning optimally.

Battery life is like most smart phones, very dependent on the signal strengths etc of the area you are at. I have been out at some mine sites the last two weeks and find the battery suffers heavily when there is signal that comes and goes. As for whatsapp I find that is also quite similar. The delayed messages from the toast notifications problem only happens to me when I am on low signal. Otherwise it comes through as I enter the app.

What do you mean by this? Do you not get notifications if you don't have the app open?

Also, it seems only IE works on this phone? No Chrome or Firefox browsers?

I'm trying to make a decision between this and the Note 2.

Go for Note 2 LTE N7105

At 186g, the Lumia 920 is heavier than its rivals.

Essential communication features such as email and SMS are hampered by a keyboard you can't abide. There's no haptic feedback, for example, and the predictive text often seems to miss the mark.

It's annoying that you have to go to a separate screen of letters if you want to use an apostrophe, something you need frequently.

You will be disappointed by the browser in Windows Phone 8; it lacks maturity, especially some of the advanced features taken for granted in Firefox Mobile or Chrome on Android.

On top of this, the browser deals with some redirects strangely. For instance, when you try to join a public or open Wi-Fi network that requires a splash-screen login, it sometimes leaves you unable to connect. The phone just will not connect.

The other elephant in the room is the app store. Availability of apps really is one of the weakest points of Windows Phone 8, and everyone knows it. It's not about sheer volume of apps, the problem is there are so few of the ones you would use the most. The most frustrating thing is the knowledge that if you are looking for a specific app, it won't be available yet.

While the Lumia 920 has near-field communications (NFC) built in, you won't be able to use it for mobile payments.

Nokia Maps, for example, you will find yourself wishing for Google's Maps software.

Microsoft's mobile OS has bad flaws that need rectifying before the handsets running it will truly be up to speed.

You cannot have a wall paper picture of your loved one.

You will not like the Lumia 920 overall.

Return it!

Notifications do come through, without the app having to be open. The notifications just seems to be a bit retarded sometimes, like it's out of sync.
Whatsapp is working on another update which will hopefully be available sooner rather than later.

A bit unfair to compare a ralatively new mobile os to others thats been around a lot longer (and also have some of their own problems), dont you think?

I have the 920 and love it! Wallpaper or not :)

It is all user dependent! I like to try out new things sometimes :)

Jesus, forget about this then. iPhone 5 or Note 2...

I'm trying to make a decision between this and the Note 2.

Wrote that quite quickly. The notifications come through with the toast and the live tile will update showing how many unread messages you have as you would expect. Then when you enter the application it will then seem to refresh and actually download the full messages, giving you a notification sound again. When in low connectivity this does not always work instantly so there will be a visible delay. Ie enter the app without seeing the messages.

As for which device dude, go to vodaworld etc and feel and use everything. I was going to go for a Note 2 but decided against it after playing with the demo model. Not that its bad, I just wanted to try something different. 920 suits my usage patterns more than adequately. Can you do as many neat things as a high powered android phone? Nope. Do I actually want those things? Nope.

It all boils down to personal preference. Until you actually use the devices you will be buying blind.

General point: Although windows phone 8 is a "new OS" I don't think that's a valid reason to justify it missing vital features. (i.e notification centre).
