Lumia 920 Thread

At 186g, the Lumia 920 is heavier than its rivals.

Essential communication features such as email and SMS are hampered by a keyboard you can't abide. There's no haptic feedback, for example, and the predictive text often seems to miss the mark.

It's annoying that you have to go to a separate screen of letters if you want to use an apostrophe, something you need frequently.

You will be disappointed by the browser in Windows Phone 8; it lacks maturity, especially some of the advanced features taken for granted in Firefox Mobile or Chrome on Android.

On top of this, the browser deals with some redirects strangely. For instance, when you try to join a public or open Wi-Fi network that requires a splash-screen login, it sometimes leaves you unable to connect. The phone just will not connect.

The other elephant in the room is the app store. Availability of apps really is one of the weakest points of Windows Phone 8, and everyone knows it. It's not about sheer volume of apps, the problem is there are so few of the ones you would use the most. The most frustrating thing is the knowledge that if you are looking for a specific app, it won't be available yet.

While the Lumia 920 has near-field communications (NFC) built in, you won't be able to use it for mobile payments.

Nokia Maps, for example, you will find yourself wishing for Google's Maps software.

Microsoft's mobile OS has bad flaws that need rectifying before the handsets running it will truly be up to speed.

You cannot have a wall paper picture of your loved one.

You will not like the Lumia 920 overall.

Return it!

Have you actually used the phone? You can't use a personal picture for a wallpaper? Google Maps over Nokia Maps?
Horse-crap, the 920 has it's own issues sure but most of what you've written is from a Android fan-boys perspective.

The phone is heavier, true.

Windows Phone 8 has one of the best out-of-box keyboards ever. You don't have to download swiftkey etc. to get a decent typing experience.

Haven't noticed the WiFi login screen problem where did you find this? Used my phone at NewsCafe's and Mugg&Bean with no issues.

Apps? Do we have 1 million fart apps; No but if you need something you almost always find what your looking for.

NFC payments are being looked at but with South Africa's slow uptake on take by the time this is a reality the iPhone 10 will be out.

Educate yourself before spewing krap about Nokia :twisted:

I get almost one day out of my S3. It comes off the charger around 7am or so. Usually by 6 or 7pm, it's dead.

Reason I'm posting here, I'm considering the Lumia as a replacement or perhaps second phone. Has anyone done this move? S3 to Lumia? If so what has been your experience particularly with battery life?

My usage is as follows:
Receive around 30-40 emails per day, only reply to one or two with the phone

Around 20 min of Web browsing and a lite Facebook

Maybe a total of 30 min chatting with Whatsapp

Make around a half hours worth of calls a day

Use the Gps navigation once in a while for say 30 min

My question, will the Lumia give me better battery life? Does Whatsapp work properly on this phone now?

Thanks.

As said go look and the phone at Vodaworld. Battery life is at you'd expect from a smart-phone but it does take a couple days for it to reach balance out.

Email integration on the phone is pretty great and the browser works really well. Facebook app isn't the best and takes a bit of getting used too.

Whatsapp is ok, not as good as on Android but the notifications come through and the app is alot faster then in the previous version. As mentioned there is an issue where if you have a low signal, you'll get the notification but the message will take a little longer to come through.

Call quality is pretty amazing, even on skype.

Best navigation available in South Africa IMO.

But honestly it's all about personal preference, my friend also got a L920 coming from an iPhone and it confuses him to no end while anyone moving from Android has found it better. Try it out and let us know what you decide.

I dont know about best navigation, I find Google maps a bit more accurate and reliable
The utility itself is great but I find its directions to be a bit dodge.. giving unnecessarily long routes to destinations etc...
But I guess its expected as its beta and a work in progress

Looks to me like your the one that needs some education.

Well if you have used an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy Note 2 keyboard you would know what I was talking about is true.

I have used the phone and returned it. Currently have iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

Yes I want my girlfriend on my wallpaper and as I scroll my Apps I want to see her all the time. Can be done on iOS and Android.

Nokia maps VS Google Maps with street view etc. You sure need some education on Google Maps. Google Maps is the top app on all iPhone's.

Some browser redirects not all. You have been lucky then.

Well I wanted Waze app. No this is just one of the million as you said fart apps that Windows Phone 8 does not have! http://www.waze.com/

You EDUCATE yourself before spewing! Get yourself a real smart phone!

Sent my lumia 920 in for the second time. I'm so tired of the constant freezes and having to soft reset it the whole time. Constantly changing the date and time after every reset is irritating. I really like the phone, but, these resets and freezes are very irritating. If I have to take it in for a third time, I am going to demand a different phone as it seems all the 920's have this problem.

The default setting was LTE and since I change it to 3g the phone works like a dream. Great phone, the Note 2 is in the drawer for a while

1. Your argument about the wallpaper thus is that, on WP8 its only available on the lock screen?
2. Google Maps is the best navigation on iPhones? Funny how iPhone in all it's glory relies on 3rd party software for decent navigation.
3. I agree awesome apps like Waze aren't available but Nokia Maps is all that and a bag of chips.

So while you have some interesting points, they are far from being facts and more of a preference. Fact != Opinion. So please go troll the Android sub-forum.

Just an update: looking at GSM arena battery life measures for 920:
9 hours for phone calls, 5:40 for internet and 6:20 for watching video.

So for internet you looking at 20% battery drain per hour while surfing/3Ging.

I had high battery drain from when surfing the internet/facebook app/taking pictures. - phone gets warm at the back.

So to save battery and get my phone through the day - i put my phone on battery saver.

It disables background apps from running, puts screen on low power, switches off all auto-sync connections.

So have 2 emails, facebook and whatapp notifications, but now have these on manual snyc instead of auto sync - which obviously would poll the servers every 5-30 minutes.
I actually like having control of when i see my new messages, otherwise i would be eternally distracted by constant notifications :D

I have location, wifi,NFC,bluetooth switched off, with low screen sensitivity (still works fine), low brightness, and connection set to 3G (haven't seen 4G in Cape town, but i'm sure phone looks for it).

Not sure how much autosnycing would drain, but I'm sure its mainly data usage/surfing that drains it the quickest.

So in summary, I'm getting over a day's battery with this setup ( i charge when i go to bed, with around 30-40% left).

My battery performance seems to be much better than yours.

I have the following on:
Bluetooth on, but only active when I'm driving and playing music saved locally from Nokia Music mixes for offline. About 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour back home.
3 pop emails updating every 30 minutes.
1 exchange email syncing.
Wifi on always.
Location services on.
Facebook tile
Whatsapp tile
LinkedIn tile
Twitter tile
Auto syncing of photos to skydrive.

Mobile data is permanently off after using close on 2.5 gigs in the first week. Use Wifi at home and work and wifi from my HTC Flyer tablet on CellC when on the road. The 920 is on Vodacom.

My battery monitor showing usage over the last few days.
13VIQ8B

Does that mean under Cellular you put data connection off? - i think this is the biggest battery drainer.

Okay so you have a permanent hotspot around with you - to get whatsapp to sync always.

2.5GB?! ish

I think Wifi >> 10x better >> than data services for your battery.

So probably find email snycing is not that bad on battery life - just seems better to default to battery saver mode, will try explore with different options enabled/disabled, and give further feedback.

Cellular data is off permanently for now as my data bundle is depleted. Will check again from the 1st.

I am of the opinion the answer to the auto reboot problem lies in this statement. Lets look at this with the background that the network operators have minimal 4G/LTE covered areas at this moment with a Lumia 920 settings/Mobile Network/ Highest Connection Speed= 4G & Access Point/ internet.apn and not LTE.apn as the SIM has to provisioned for LTE by the network for those on post paid contracts for now. The device is searching for the "4G = Highest Speed" and not finding it because the APN is on internet.apn and not 4G/LTE.apn resulting in Auto reboots caused by the Network Provider and NOT the phone.

Ivanr I seriously think you need to stop spewing out crap. Your opinion seems to be that any problem/issue/fault with this phone is that of the end user/network provider/app developer and not with Nokia/MS.

I love this phone but THE PHONE HAS PROBLEMS not related to the end user.

The reboot is a PHONE problem. Even Nokia knows this. If the phone can automatically switch from 3g to 2g when network coverage is a problem, why should the switch from LTE to 3g be any different. Nokia seems to have fixed this with the latest updates that the network providers still have to roll out. Last I heard is that the update is available for download.

As a Nokia and Lumia fan, you are doing a serious disservice to Nokia by blatantly calling its users idiots by your comments and implying that the phone is flawless.

I am sure every product you ever bought always worked the way it should and when there was a problem with it it was because you did not know how to use it as instructed by the manual.

Yes there are issues on this Lumia 920 caused by Network Providers combined with lack of "how to use" by owners of this device, not deterring from the fact that the device has a few problems that will be resolved by the Portico update when we officially receive notice of update.
Thank you Sir.

@ Ivanr

I will oblige and add you to my ignore list as I can't stand reading all your crap.

My phone reset and froze even when I had it only on 2g. I'm sorry, but, if a phone freezes just because it roams 4g, then it's not ready for market. What if I need my phone in a emergency, but, I have to wait 10 seconds for it to restart? Please. That's ridiculous. Is a great phone. It just needs work.

All I am doing with the phone is browsing the net, whatsapp, calling and smsing. I am not running 29 applications at a time. I am not over exerting it. If it can't handle that, them, it's obviously a piece of crap. I mean, I would think in this day an age, you would expect a premium phone to stay ON. it's very frustrating. I am using it normally and it still freezes. It not my fault nokia made a dud.

I hope Vodacom can swap me out with another one. I am so tired of sending it in to get fixed.

Waste of money at this point.

Not sure when the Portico update will be rolled out by the networks but it is available on Navifirm for both Vodacom & MTN. Check on XDA Forums on how to manually do the update.

I had mine switch off twice but not in the last week. I have not updated yet and will wait on Vodacom to announce when it will be available via OTA.

I would try and get it swapped out as your unit might be completely faulty.

Hey guys, have yet to have a reset, but my phone did something really strange yesterday. Was playing with the setting, trying to download a software update - which started then froze, said needed wifi. (also tried downloading a new voice/language pack which asked for a reset, but never actually did it)

So >> My Bing wallpaper disappeared and my theme colour for tiles disappeared- all the tiles are black (with a dark background), and I cant' change the colour. Can't get them back.

Not sure if the only thing that might fix it is a hard reset?

That sounds pretty bizarre, I would probably hard reset it and see what happens.

The Wifi is normal if you are downloading certain size files or certain things (like the SA maps for the navigation)
