Anyone signed up to Lycamobile? They operate in SA as a MVNO on the Cell C network and have some cracking and straight forward deals similar to what they have in other markets.

E.g. 4GB and 100 anynet minutes for R99/30 days.

Questions - is this 4G/LTE data? And where can you find a SIM card?

If they’re anything to do with UK Lycamobile be very careful, they are a shifty lot with some dubious business practices.

96% 1 star ratings

95% 1 star ratings

Looks like they’re just as bad in Australia as well

I can understand that dealing with their Customer Service may be a bit of a pain but if you're OK managing your account online and the host network has good coverage then you should be OK. At least that's my experience in the UK...

Lycamobile in the UK are abysmal, not just for customer service, things like credit disappearing, data disappearing, at one stage they were using non-standard dial prefixes which meant everyone was being charged outside of allowance to call the Lyca phone.

They’re also infamous for having marvellous special offers that just disappear from the website without trace.

It’s a really crappy company that ends up with 96% 1 out of 5 stars, especially as they’ll undoubtedly have shill reviews trying to up their rating.

Think about it, more than 9 out of 10 people think they are absolutely crap...

I have a Lycamobile SIM somewhere I got from a European country this year. Forget which country. Wasn't UK though

If not Lycamobile, then any good recommendations for prepaid or month-on-month deals? I just like the idea of being able to choose from a range of minutes + data bundles similar to that offered by Lycamobile, GiffGaff, etc. I'm finding the deals in SA very confusing and difficult to compare!

You're really punting aren't you, just pay for advertising.

Thank you for corresponding with Lycamobile.

Please be advised that the Sim cards and vouchers are currently available in the Gauteng and Durban only. We are still in a process of availing the Sim Cards and vouchers in all the other areas as soon as possible. Provide us with where you are situated so we can sent you a list of retailers close to you."

They sent me a list of dealers in Jhb area that have SIM cards etc.

Used this in the states, it was ****en terrible.Couldnt even get a signal half the time.
I would say try to use a local prepaid provider before you touch Lycamobile.Just search for complaints + Lyca and have a look see.

As it turns out they only offer SIM cards in Gauteng and Durban at present (I will be in CT) - must be a soft launch. And - yes - they only operate on the Cell C 3G network so not such a good deal after all.

Lyca's value proposition is centred around international calling rates right? So perhaps for business owners, and feature phone users. Can't see this being compelling enough to smartphone users with voip calling apps etc.

No I'm not - just seems like a good deal on paper. But as its difficult to get a SIM card in Cape Town and the fact that they only operate on 3G then it's probably not.

Seeing you are an Expert Member then perhaps you can recommend alternatives? Best I can find on prepaid seems to be the Telkom FreeMe bundles - but then the inclusive minutes are only Telkom to Telkom.

So not much use if you're in Cape Town, I've also found out they only do 2/3G - so not such a great deal after all.

Next best prepaid all inclusive bundles I could find are the Telkom FreeMe bundles. Good value on the data but the inclusive minutes are only Telkom to Telkom. But does appear to include WhatsApp voice calling..

What exactly do you need?
Minutes for calling? South African destination or international?
Data? On telkom sim you have wifi access in many malls.
Might be cheaper just to roam on your normal Sim.
