Hi guys

Has anybody been contacted by Telkom to form part of the ADSL-M-Net Video Streaming Trial? This trial is free and as far as I could recall your cap will not be enforced during that period.

Regards,

RPM

ooh seems cool, but wat the heck i dont even care to watch m-net on the tv, wat a useless trial, imagine how much they gonna ask for the service when it goes live...

money hungry bastards

Are they perhaps looking at using multicasts? And not having multicast traffic count towards the cap?
Multicasts allow 1 copy of the data to filter through the network thus saving having multiple copies of it going down the same line to multiple destinations.
One has to wonder what the benefit is to Mnet, since they already broadcast very well via Satelite. Why would I want to watch Mnet on my PC? Unless they plan to offer movies on demand (which wont be multicast anyhow) its a waste of time, and I do not believe current SA infrastructure will support that.

its more like Telkom to get users attracted on longer basis with added Services (added fee?)

WOW did I just say that, they trying to provide a service?

I think it might be an initiative to get foreigners to watch mnet/dstv via their pc's

I'm very keen on the idea. I already use my system as a HTPC to record TV shows and play back via the TV. I don't have a dish and the OTA reception of Mnet is poor in Hout Bay so I would jump at it if the service were offerd (depending on cost).

DSTV yes, but MNET has very little these days that's actually worth watching (IMO).

Isn't this part of the government grant provided by ou honourable Minister of Finance (not sarcastic, I really like our Trev!!), to shape up our broadcasting infrastructure??

:)

Maybe they're gonna use something like Flatcast. East Coast Radio in Durban uses this p2p app to enable them to provide only 1 outgoing audio stream.
While I listen to the station, someone else gets the audio stream from me.
Unfortunately, this means you send and receive the same amount of data, sometimes you send even more if more than 1 "client" connect to you. ADSL users would not like this, I think...
