From FB:

EMER-G-MED Paramedics responded to the M1 highway near Grayston Drive, as the pedestrian bridge collapsed onto the highway.

Three cars were trapped under the bridge. A taxi, a Fortuner and a construction vehicle. Tragically the driver of the taxi was killed.

The passengers sustained moderate to serious injuries. The driver and passengers in the Fortuner are trapped in the vehicle. EMS are working to free them.

Around 30 people have sustained critical to moderate injuries. EMER-G-MED Paramedics and other services are treating the patients on scene and will be transporting them to hospital.

The highway will be closed in both directions for some time. Please avoid the area.

I've sent off the images to my local retired civil engineer for a preliminary analysis. The staging should've have failed like that.

The structural engineer would have designed the bridge, not the scaffolding and formwork required to build the bridge. This is the contractor through and through.

That's not a pedestrian bridge... It's a roadway scaffold that's part of the whole upgrade they're doing at that off-ramp

Even if blown sideways by a strong gust of wind? So maybe vertically it was strong enough, but the horizontal movement cause the collapse?

Yea, it clearly looks like a bridge that was still being built (or a temporary bridge) , not an actual completed bridge.... you can see the scaffolding all over the road. I bet the safety/regulations around these constructions are not as checked upon as real/final bridges...won't be surprised if someone took shortcuts with this.

Murray & Roberts probing Sandton bridge collapse

Naledi Shange, News24

Johannesburg - Murray & Roberts, the company responsible for the construction at the M1 highway where a temporary bridge collapsed on Wednesday, said it was probing the incident.

Company spokesperson Ed Jardim said they did not immediately have all the details of the incident, but they had sent people to the scene.

"We have not been able to look at the cause as yet. At the moment, we are concentrating on ensuring that if there are any people injured, they are attended to quickly," said Jardim.

He said the company would be issuing a statement shortly. It was unclear how many people, if any, were injured in the incident.

Reports from the scene are that at least one vehicle was trapped after the pedestrian bridge collapsed. A motorist told Eyewitness News that he saw the structure crash onto the car behind him.

According to an eNCA report a minibus taxi was trapped underneath.

A photograph shows the red structure, which was reportedly meant to be a pedestrian crossing, blocking both the north and south-bound lanes of the highway.

It was unclear whether any people had been on the bridge at the time.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha told News24 paramedics were on the scene, and would provide information soon.

Wonder whether or not there were any workers killed / injured?

Edit:

And I'm glad I'm not one of the engineers from Murray & Roberts working on that bridge.
