Yeah, bummer is work in Braamfontein, and that is one HUGE detour. So have to drop her off, come to work, and then fetch again in the afternoon.

I'd imagine they will reopen the road at some point today.

Nah they are moving rapidly should be open today...

On a positive note, better that the steel construction collapsed before they poured the concrete.

Imagine what would've happened should they :

1. Pour wet concrete and the whole thing collapses under the strain with cars underneath and workers on top...
2. Pour concrete and it sets, but collapses halfway through drying...
3. Remove scaffolding after concrete have set, and it collapses a day later with cars underneath and pedestrians/workers on top...

Sad, scary and I'm glad I don't drive the M1 to work.

Condolences to all the people who lost loved ones and friends...

M&R will probably get hit with penalties as well due to the unexpected delay on this project.

Wonder just what went wrong, the steel construction should've not buckled even with a strong gust of wind.

I heard the scaffolding (which seems to be the culprit here) was sub-contracted to a third party, who would have used their own engineers to sign off on the work.

What I mean is don't point fingers solely at M&R until all the parties involved have been investigated

They look similar and are a few km apart, just gets my back up that people are looking at that pic and going "well OF COURSE it fell over"...

However that bridge should be checked out as well.

THAT is the next collapse WAITING to happen imo. Unless of course it wasn't the wind and it was actually hit by the cement truck.

I know it's not the same bridge, I'm pointing at the quality of the supports they are using.
It's the same company.

Thought that too at first but the bridge fell towards the cement truck, look at the angles, technically the bridge hit the cement truck... And there are chocks under the wheel and it was halfway through pouring concrete

That truck was stationary. See the stone under the rear wheel.
Unless that was put there afterwards.

It had different support structures. It was a lot bigger as well. Only thing similar is the colour (red).

That looks like a stone and not a chock to me. Defective handbrake much? Also looks like the load was dumped and wasnt being "poured". Why would they pour onto the sand out in the open?
