So today my friend and I were in a massive rush and he accidentally backed his M3 into his mum's Merc. Needless to say he took some damage, but nothing too serious. He's left with a lot of scratches which are highly visible, a paint chip right down to the bumper of about 1cm and lower down a line of lost paint.

He's been using Scratch X on it and has taken out alot of the scratches to the point where you have to look for it in order to find it. But up close it can still be found and looks bad. Does anyone have any advice on how to remove them completely? And what can be done about the paint chips? DIY is preferred but if anyone knows how we can get some touchup paint, please let us know! He's based in JHB

I am only familiar with Meguiars products. By hand you'd want to use Ultimate Compound on a foam polish applicator pad to remove deeper scratches and then follow up with something a little less abbrasive like SwirlX/ScratchX/Ultimate Polish(new product) to remove any hazing and refine the finish.

Using a machine polisher like a DA will result in a slightly better finish and in much quicker time than by had. You'll need to use something like M105 and then follow up with M205 to refine the finish.

The chips will be best done by a professional. What they'd do is fill chip with touch-up paint if it is small chip. Then wet-sand to smooth down and then follow up with polishes likw M105/M205. Also may need clear coat after etc. Lot of work if you want it perfect.
 
Well, look in the engine bay for the manufaturing details. Normally the colour code should be on there if you lucky.
You can then go to an auto shop and get the correct touch up paint.

But it looks like he might not be so lucky, so just use some Tippex to fill the hole and use similar coloured permanent marker over that.
 
Okay so Ultimate compound would be a better choice? His paint code is A73, do you know of anyone who does paint touch ups in the JHB area?
 
If the chip isn't too big then Sonax make a colour coded polish with a filling pencil designed for stone chips and scratches.

Sonax is available at Builders Warehouse. Used it on my Red car and works perfectly.
 
Any reason why this thread is titled "M3 help"? :confused: oh you want us to know you have a friend that drives an M3 :love:

he got some touch up paint mixed and put in a spray can at some place
 
Some useful advice in the form of Meguirs prods. Bottom line is that you are going to spend quite a bit of money on these prods, which would be better spent on getting a professional repair.
A professional repair should not cost more than R1000, but I am sure you sure be able to get it done for a lot less - as low as R200 maybe at one of these 'dent magic' places. Just shop around, as some of them will try to rip you off if it's a M3.
I had a long deep scratch in my fender, and had the entire fender resprayed for around R600. I had a small deep indentation on another fender, down to metal, and repaired for around R250, almost impossible to see it any more.
 
Good luck applying DIY products to a BMW...the colour is inevitably wrong. And the BMW shops tell you to replace the entire panel if its an aluminium panel.
