Pretoria - Presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj is to retire, the Presidency announced on Tuesday.

Maharaj will retire at the end of April 2015.

"Mr Maharaj, President Zuma’s former Special Envoy and former Cabinet Minister in South Africa’s first democratic administration, turns 80-years-old in April this year and has decided 'it is time to slow down a bit'.

“We wish to thank Mr Maharaj for this special service to the President and the country and wish him well in his retirement,” said President Jacob Zuma.

Harold Maloka, Deputy Director-General in the Government Communication and Information System, will be acting spokesperson from May 2015 until further notice.

Maharaj could not immediately be reached by News24 to reveal what he would do with his time.

Wonder if they can employ someone who can lie as easily as Mac though.

Such a pity. I was waiting for somebody to invent a way to use all the hot air that came out of his pie hole to generate some electricity. Seems it's another power source lost to South Africa.

NOW - who is going to talk garbage in his place? Is there someone clever enough to spin the amount of drivel he did? Maybe Vusi Mona from SANRAL?

Maybe he has finally run out of excuses...

Swan dive off a cliff while you're at it, Mac!

No need for a follow-up 'cos nobody cares about scum.

You are going to miss him. Watching someone talk such utter crap with such a serious expression was something to behold. Maybe he will move on to present a late night show in the US.

Mac isn't retiring.

You are just misinterpreting the statement.

Racists.

Heh, I know Mac Maharajh. He really is quite a good chap outside of his job.
