So i am on a voyage of discovery and recently decided to enter the world of the Home Theatre PC...

I had a look at all the windows based solutions, however i ended up going with a Mac option (Enter Fanboi abuse here >> <<<) as i have a large number of OS devices at home and the integration and syncing was a major factor for me.

So i have purchased a Mac Mini, which i will now use to run the media in my house as well as any future home automation..

So far it have...

  • 4MB Uncapped ADSL line, our exchange cant handle more
  • Mac Mini with 1.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 2.7GHz) with 3MB on-chip shared L3 cache 4GB of 1600MHz LPDDR3, with a 500GB HDD
  • 4 TB WD PassBook external HDD (Will remain Static)
  • 1 TB WD Passport external HDD (Used for Traveling)
  • Running on a 60" LED Samsung TV
  • Running OS Yosemite
  • Running Kodi Helix
  • Logitec Wifi Keyboard with Trackpad for Operation

Plans for this afternoon are to :

  • Install Airplay 3 in order to Mirror the Mac Mini screen onto my iPad Mini, allowing both control and view of media via the iPad
  • Subscribe to AstraWeb for File Access as well as SSL layering to avoid being throttled
  • Install and Setup Sonarr for Auto Downloading of Media via Astrweb
  • Install Plex to allow remote access to Media

So hopefully by the end of tomorrow i will have a fully functional Media Centre...

Question i have is what next... What other options should i look at once ?

Use Plex as your main client. That Kodi thing looks hideous... judging from screenshots.

Max out the ram in that machine, you should be able to get as mush a 16gb in there.

Open to correction here but I don;t think Airplay works the way you anticipate using it - my understanding is that you can cast your i[pad screen onto the Mac but not the other way around. Let me know if it's possible though because I may be living in the dark ages... I still use VNC to get ono my Mac Mini HTPC.

I used a 2006 mac mini up until the end of last year as our media server - only stopped because it no longer supported Plex. We replaced it with a 2010 MBA.

how can kodi be hideous ? when you can customize it and has more plugins than plex

They're skins - that beauty of Kodi.

I find mine looks great, but you may not agree and ... can change it
