ok so i took the plunge and got the mac pro
where do i get reasonably priced ram?
Official 'apple ram' seems highly overpriced.

it is ridiculously over priced. Go to digicape or pm vertigoza

I got my ram for my machine from Axiz, it's Kingston memory comes in pairs for the Pro I don't want to mention what I paid as it was cost but it was one hell of a lot cheaper compared to anywhere else for 4GB. I now have 6GB and it's worth every cent :D

Maybe someone around the forum has Axiz account :D

what is this axiz of which you speak??

It's a wholesaler kinda like Rectron, there are other places that do Kingston memory too it's much cheaper and it works just fine.

My temps are in fact lower on the Kingston memory according to temperature monitor.

ok - so i can look for kingston? what are the specs/part numbers etc..ie what do i need to ask for?

also - graphics cards - the stock ati card in the mac pro is a bit lame - where can i get an upgrade at a reasonable price? do gpu's have to be apple specific models?

thanks - i'll try and source locally first - otherwise i might consider importing.

anyone know anything about the gpu issue? does any standard pcie card work or do you need the endorsed-by-lord-jobs edition?

I bought Mac Pro RAM from www.transintl.com

The problem with Mac Pro RAM is that it has to have those specialised heat sinks, otherwise it overheats and your fans really kick in, making your computer sound like a Boeing 747 at take-off. Crucial also makes Mac Pro RAM.

$92 for 4GB - about R1000 plus EMS shipping and local TAX.

I've bought from transintl previously. Very reliable and easy. You get charged VAT and a small clearance fee (R40 if I can remember correctly) at the POst Office for customs. For RAM on the newer machines, it is usually cheaper to import.

great thanks - between crucial, kingston and this ram from transint, any recommendations? or are they all equal?

I can't say - I only have 1 GB of Apple RAM ( I think it's also by Crucial ) and
6GB of TransIntl. TransIntl RAM has a lifetime warranty and the first 2GB I bought from them had some CRC errors, I RMA'ed it and they sent me a replacement. Just make sure to keep all the customs invoicing because
SARS will double tax you if you ever RMA anything and the company sends you a replacement. They don't care what the company writes. They just want to make a quick buck.

However the other 4GB has worked perfectly as does the replacement RAM.
Computer runs silent. My Toughbook is louder than my Mac Pro :).

I've maxed this RAM out many times with Compressor, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, VM Fusion and have also tested it to 100% utilisation with a Memory testing application.

TransIntl ship to SA and don't ask for any faxed credit card statements or passports, so using your CC there is straightforward.

Oh and my other favourite Apple online store is Toolfarm. ToolFarm.com sells very little Apple hardware but you can buy all the Adobe Products and Apple Products there,
at cheaper than Core prices with Flat Rate shipping by FedEx (USD $55 for a 10kg box :) ).
