I am looking into getting my oldest a macbook air,

This is for Studies next year. All i know about it is it has a good battery life and limited storage. MacBook Air 13-inch | Apple M1 chip | 256GB - Space Grey.

Do any of you have kids, are they using it to study, is it good enough? Should I take the extended 3 year warranty with screen repair. I know Windows Laptops are cheaper but I haven't seen anything that his this type of battery life.

It will be more than sufficient, and yes the battery life on it is insane.

Not necessary to take the extended warranty, just make sure your kid looks after it nicely. Or include it in your household insurance policy.

You can always buy an external SSD at a later stage if storage is a problem.

Digicape has it for a R1000 less than iStore at the moment FYI.

Nice - I'd insure it. I had to replace my screen recently and it wasn't cheap. :crying:

I broke my M1's screen, again... anyone have any idea what it's going to cost locally to get it repaired?

No but I’ll know but Friday how much istore charges to replace one on a MacBook Pro M2 Pro 16”…. Someone at work had a little accident.

The only thing i replaced on my MacBook Air was a keyboard that meet an untimely death with a latte. That was just on 12.5k with a trackpad.

☝️ this

also make sure backups are working and even though they might not be a programmer, find out how to use git for whatever work they're going to be doing on there. i've heard too many stories of people who had no backups and their laptops got stolen with their research projects on.

edit: if you're making backups on an external drive, then never keep that drive with the laptop. also do cloud backups.

I replaced the USB C ports on my M1 and was wondering if anyone knew of an app to test the speed so I know if everything is as it should be?

EDIT:
Replacement kit from £8.99/R200 Amazon UK -
