I got the "Service Battery" message appearing on my MacBook Pro this morning. The battery is just over 4 years old and has a health of 73%, so it's most likely time to consider changing it. I have the 13", Mid 2012 model.

I figured I could just go to an iStore and buy/order one, but I was told it's company policy to have the unit booked in and assessed, which will take 7-10 working days. I live in Centurion. One of the techies mentioned to me that a new battery would cost about R3,000

I've already contacted DigiCape but have not received a response yet. Does anyone know where I could get a reliable replacement battery at a much more affordable price? I have looked at MacWave which prices the battery at R1,600 but the website mentions that parts are not sold - the unit has to booked in with them.

Have a look at http://www.iso4u.co.za/.

Digicape quoted me around R5k for a new battery.

Just make sure the battery you get is a genuine Apple battery, I've seen people go the cheaper route and then after 5-10 cycles the "new" battery is sitting on 70% capacity.

Buy an original off ebay and fit it yourself. It's easy enough. Just need to remove all the screws on the bottom to access the battery.

Check ibreak.co.za

I sent my mid 2012 macbook air to the iStore after getting the battery warning but the machine was older than 1 year. The local apple okes just about destroyed the screws removing/replacing when they opened my macbook. Don't go there!

I bought a replacement battery on ebay for $69 (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/e1140...ransId=1503881341017&itemId=271918117504&qu=1)

I have a proper pentalobe screwdriver for your MacBook if you need it. I used a cheap screwdriver from iPhone repair kit and ended up damaging two screws on my MacBook. If your screws still have a small chance of being removed the normal way, you are welcome to use the screwdriver. You can also just bring it around and i'll try and remove them for you.

Thanks Vinodh. I started drilling on the ones I couldnt get out :(

Telling you to replace the battery when its at 73%? A bit of a low threshold if you ask me.

My mid-2011 11" Air's battery started swelling. It wasn't a nice thing to see, but it was caught early. Just do a google image search for "Apple swollen battery" for a shock. Right now it is sitting battery-less - removed before something popped or exploded. It is still useable with power plugged in.

New battery is around R2500. Service will take a few minutes. Getting it done through iFix who claim the battery is certified. I do trust iFix though. Expecting to pay around R3000 total.

Finally replaced mine with the battery I bought off ebay for $75. Getting 3 days standby. GF watches movies on the machine at night - 4 hours plus at a time with no top up charges.
