Lately, my macbook seems to be taking its time booting up - I realise that I have installed tons of stuff on it and removed it again if its not worthwhile so it probably needs a good file system cleanup - I have checked what is loaded in the autologin settings under users but there is nothing that is out of the ordinary.
Is there possibly a tool that can scan my filesystem to clean it up a bit - mainly to identify orphaned files left over from previous installations?? Could large log files also be a culprit?? in that case I need something to clear these log files.

Reboot
CMD+S
Type in
fsck -fy
When done type in
reboot

For Log file cleanup

Tidy Up! v1.3.3

On another note - I suppose running disk utility directly from the OS is not a good way of sorting out issues - should actually boot up with the boot DVD's then run disk utility - according to what I've read now.

Decided to make use of the downtime (power is off) and run DiskWarrior.

Try booting from safe mode (Hold down shift) and maybe reset the SMC. Also run the hardware test using the OSX disc (bootup holding D).

If the disk check does not help(stba suggested) then a clean install may be in order.

Clean install is not an option - found this while googling
Open "Font Book" in your Apps folder, wait for the 'All' list to populate. If you see any font names with a black bullet point to the right, that is a duplicate font. At this point you can click any font name in the list, then 'select all' there is a 'resolve duplicates' from the edit window, this should happen quickly. Log-out or restart, and you will have jaw-dropping performance again!

have also downloaded cocktail - will give it a test run

Well its always an option and the prospect isnt nearly as daunting as doing it in windows if you've been backing up. :)

Have you booted from the dvd and run disk utility?

Yep, I have my user folder on a separate partition, after I format and reinstall the system partition everything is still in my user folder. But before you reinstall create a new user account if this boots up quickly then just transfer your settings and delete the old account if it's still slow then do a clean install.

why not? run an archive and install then?
fonts cause havoc, are u a designer? how many fonts do u have?

Ran the cocktail utility app and it cleared up quite a few log files and other 'things' etc - also did the fsck thing and the macbook is booting up much better now.

OSX has a built-in cache cleaner/maintenance function

In terminal:
sudo periodic daily weekly monthly

and enter password, see if it speeds things up.

This should run automatically but only if you leave your Mac on long enough.
