Ever the upgrader, I'm already looking out for a bigger disc for my MacBook :D I've got the 80GB one....

Firstly, does anyone out here have the 250GB model? Could you please post the model number of the drive? It's in System Profiler under 'Hardware' -> 'Serial-ATA.' I imagine it would be the same drive used in the MacBook Pro.

Secondly, I came across this:
http://www.digital-fusion.co.uk/Inu_products/INU_ProdDetailsL9.asp?ref=57309196

Now that would keep me happy for a while! Does anyone know if the MacBooks are fussy about the brand/model of disc you put into them (like my HP is)? When I upgraded the disc in my Mini I put in a Seagate (my first choice) which was convenient since the Mini had a Seagate disc in.

The MacBook has a Hitachi. I have a nice selection of discs lying around, but they're all IDE.

Also, can I put generic RAM in or do I need to get the 'tested-for-mac' modules? For Exaple:

Generic ram is fine - and user upgradeable - note 100% sure the hdd is though, as far as the warranty goes.

Yeah, I guess once I pop the hood to put in a bigger disc I might as well violate the warranty by replacing the combo drive...

Your funeral :eek:

My warranty is up in Jan so I'm going to find me a nice big 7200 - that site you mentioned above isnt the easiest I've ever seen when it comes to locating drive though

The 7200rpm disc gave a good improvement in responsiveness but the it causes the Mini to make some humming sound. Made worse by standing on a wooden table. I'm not sure I want that in my notebook. Since the Mini is no longer my main computer anymore, I might just put the 120gb/5400rpm disc back.

Thanks for the tips on memory. alf101, do you have the ordinary Kingston Value Ram? I saw this:

[ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-Memory-200-pin-unbuffered-non-ECC/dp/B000IOC8GC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1197329747&sr=8-1"]Amazon.co.uk: Kingston - Memory - 2 GB - SO DIMM 200-pin - DDR II - 533 MHz - CL4 - 1.8 V - unbuffered - non-ECC: Electronics & Photo: Kingston ValueRAM[/ame]

Looks good. The nice thing about the mac-tested Crucial is that it comes in matched pairs. I imagine it's worth the extra cash...

If that was 667 instead of 533 I'd take one for my MBP - :o

How much more is the Crucial? I cant see how their 'matched pair' could be any more matched than 2 of these chips. :confused:

Aah well spotted! I copied the wrong one. Should be this:

[ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/2GB-667MHZ-DDR2NON-ECC-CL5-SODIMM/dp/B000JREMTO/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1197330601&sr=8-1"]Amazon.co.uk: 2GB 667MHZ DDR2NON-ECC CL5 SODIMM: Electronics & Photo: Kingston[/ame]

And it's cheaper :D

AFAIR Alex Lindsey from Pixelcor had some issues with putting a big HDD into his MacBook Pro, apparently when trying to install, OSX could not see the drive.

Check the Apple/Support site.

I have just put a 250GB Western Digital into my Macbook. It doesn't void the warranty in any way as is it a user serviceable part.

Excluding the time it toook me to drive to the hardware store to buy the Torx (star shaped) screwdriver (no 8) it took less than 5 minutes to swap it out.

I installed Leopard on it and of course hard to format the disk first in Disk utility. Going from 60GB to 250GB is like night and day.

Next step is to bump the RAM to 2GB from the 1GB I have now and then I have pretty much maxed out this machine.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I just wish it was a user serviceable part in the MBP. :o

iirc he didnt take his time and forgot a couple screws and bent the chasis.

Do some searching - iirc I read somewhere that the 7200rpm drive gets exceedingly hot in the Macbook. I upgraded mine to a 160gb Seagate bought locally (actually from Supersunbird on the forums). Works very well and have had no hassels.

I have the MBP - it gets warm anyway.

I'm rendering a huge mosaic right now and with both CPUs going at 95% the beast is cooking. :)

I agree on that! I have cooked legs after using the MBP on my lap ... if it gets any hotter, well, you might as well bring the firewood for a nice lap-braai :D

Does LiquidMac still work?

That's great to know!

I already have a Torx no 8 - was necessary to keep the HP going... :D

I ordered a 2GB module last night. I was going to get two, but Amazon had only one in stock :(

Don't think he'll be buying from T2, they don't deliver to UK. :)
Still - I wonder why 1gb from T2 is roughly the same price as 2gb from Amazon.co.uk?

I'm sure they do, but via the S.A. postal service - naah. I like my next-day-by-snail-mail delivery :D
