My neighbour spilled some water behind, not on her powered up macbook. She picked it up and thought no water had gotten inside. Unfortunately she kept working with it. 5 minutes later the fan started making a sound, there were some beeps and then it went dead.

She used a hairdryer on it and waited a few days before trying to turn it on again but no luck. She's now considering getting a new macbook but wanted to pick brains to see if maybe it could be saved. Any advice?

If there is no real hope, is there some place that would pay for the spare parts to offset some of the cost of the new one?

Cape Town. Don't think she'd want to wait (really needs it for work and mail) but might be an idea to get a new one then can get the old one fixed and sell it...if the repair cost isn't over the top.

I asked about that. She didn't seem to think she was covered but she's with santam and I'm pretty sure this kind of accident would be covered.

Agreed. My ordinary Santam household contents policy covers accidental damage, which would cover this.

That said, if it's a specified item then I'm not sure what the fine print is.

Cape Town.

There's an independent guy by the name of Denis that's been mentioned here several times as he knows his schite and apparently charges a flat rate of R750 (might have gone up since then & I could be wrong about the flat rate) for logic board repairs on all types of electronics. He's sorted out several peoples Macs here so far.

Give him a call and see what he says. Core/Digicape etc will rip you a new *sshole to the extent of several thousand rands.

I must actually contact OutSurance, and check where I stand... Surely a laptop would need to be a specified item - given the price of them these days?

It might be covered, but call them anyway to declare it is an "out and about" item.

On the insurance that i have had the laptop only needs to be specified if it is outside the house or worth more than a certain limit. otherwise it's normal household content.

1000% for denis (spelt denis - he's of french blood)
he has done work for me on a couple of machines - always 100% success, never had to return a machine to him

I'm pretty sure he is a fiery red Scotsman, not a Frenchie but yes be is a legend.

******

And yes insurance should cover such and accident if it happened at home.

no, definitely of french descent.
i specifically recall standing at the counter chatting to him about his bike on one occasion.
he was entertaining us with tales of his various misadventures & somehow his name (or the spelling thereof) came up.
he was quite clear in that is spelt denis, not dennis due to his (or that of his family's) french background

Well a good chunk of the people in the UK have a French background anyway.

From what I have seen...
(a few different insurers, and clients)
The laptop is covered in your home
but the moment you cross the front gate it is not covered, unless you specified out and about.
the same applies for most phones.

Asking your insurer about their policies could offer you peace of mind.

What MacBook is it? I had a high spec 2011 MacBook Pro 15'' that had water damage. Got quotes for anything from R16k to R20k. Would simply suggest buying a new one.

Put some sort of screen protector on the screen and cover the macbook with rice
