Anyone using keyboard or trackpad protectors on their MacBooks? Pros, cons, does it work for you or not?

From what I read it was a bad idea on older Macbooks because they vented heat through the keyboard, but with newer MacBook Pro's that's apparently not a problem anymore. I also read that the entire MacBook Pro body being metal sort of acts like one big heat sync, so will covering it with protectors make a difference considering that I'm also planning to get some sort of cover for it?
I also see typing can be effected, but I guess that's a personal thing and something to get use to. I also read the keyboard protector can leave oily prints on the screen, any experience of this?

My fingers is quite oily and I guess I don't always make sure my hands are perfectly clean before using my computer keyboards. my solution up to now was to use cheap USB keyboards on both my PC and iMac which I replace once a year or so and inbetween I clean them with spirits.

Cleaning a MacBook Pro keyboard with spirits is not such a good idea and replacing it once a year won't be a option, it also definatly won't cost R150 odd to replace, hense my consideration to get a keyboard protector for it.

The Moshi Clear Guard protector and palm/trackpad protector is not the cheapest options around, but they get very good reviews. So do I go for it and add a screen protector while I'm at it?

P.S. I found a post of earlier this year where Apple warns that no keyboard protector or trackpad protector should be used on Macbooks, they give a couple of reasons. But yet, the official US Apple store sells the Moshi protectors online???

It's a bit hard to get used to and doesn't feel comfortable either.

Oh and my new work environment also doesn't always allow for washing hands, water isn't close by. You handle things, you pickup things, open doors, carry stuff around etc, hands get durty. If I had the choice I would wash my hands a lot more throughout the day, but the new work environment doesn't allow for that.

If you can't keep the original clean...how will you keep the protector clean?

This stuff to me is an answer to a problem that doesn't exist.

Take some alcohol every few months and clean it. Simple.

Waste of good alcohol. You sort of got a point, but the protector is much cheaper to replace than the MacBook or its keyboard. Moshi claim the thing is washable, but even if not bargaining on that, still cheaper to replace than the keyboard.

Yep - just use a slightly damp cloth. Mine gets mucky all the time. Occupational hazard.

In thirteen years of supporting MacBooks and owning a couple I have never needed to replace a MacBook keyboard because it got dirty.

This really isn't a problem you need to worry about.

And besides, you couldn't drink that alcohol anyway. :)
