Macbook Pro: one year later...

The likelihood that the design is going to be altered is great; this will have a greater impact on the resale value IMO -- hence unless urgent, rather wait or set your sale value expectations lower.

The senario is actually hypothetical. Sorry if I mislead you.

I was wondering if it could actually be better for someone to sell their MBP every year than to get and Extended Warranty

check out bidorbuy.co.za for secondhand macs...you will get an idea of the market rates you can expect...to be honest...expect to lose 30%

$1799 for the same R19000 spec
+$349 for AppleCare = 119.4% increase of price = $2148 or R22686

Now considering you laptop will lose:
  • 20% for the 1st year it will instead of R19000 be valued at R15200
  • 30% for the 1st year (possible if there is a substantial change to the look e.g. airifying it), it will instead of R19000 be valued at R13300

IMO not many people buying second hand kit will even consider the paying more because you have extended AppleCare (IMO that is generally a lost investment unless you plan to keep the kit).

  • Basically at 20% you lose R3800, which makes AppleCare seem like a waste of money, unless this is kit is becoming more of a lifer choice (i.e. keep for the full length of an extended AppleCare)
  • Similarly at 30% you lose R5700, which again makes AppleCare seem like a waste of money, unless this is kit is becoming more of a lifer choice (i.e. keep for the full length of an extended AppleCare)
Side note: you might find new second models for cheaper than it costs overall for your older model MBP + AppleCare (must say I'm not really sold on the AppleCare thing)

I'm in the stable that says buy the latest and greatest each year, keep all your packaging, including cellophane and try to flog your 1 year old kit for as much as you can get (After reboxing It will look and give the second hand purchase almost an identical feeling to the one you had when you unboxed it), when I can't seem to stem the market value loss below the cost of AppleCare, I then choose AppleCare before it runs out (you of course have 1 year to make that call).

Also buying slightly later than model refreshes and selling slightly earlier; still allow the second hand purchaser the choice to buy AppleCare or not (it's just not at my cost)
