If I buy a MBP today, for R19 000. Would I be able to sell it for at least R16 000 in 1 year's time?

If not. What would you be willing to pay for a one year old MBP?

(this could be seen as me buying a MBP right after a new version is released)

MBP's keep their value very well.
But it is hard to predict due to various factors : New models, inflation, Rand/Dollar exchange rate fluctuation, etc

But R16 000 sounds pretty reasonable

The only problem is a new body design is possibly coming. If they release a new design itll hurt the resale of the current models by quite a bit.

I can't imagine a very drastic change to the body in the next year

I can. Read the speculation. I reckon most MBPs will be similar to the MB Air in the next year. Especially once they get rid of the spinning HDD and optical drive.

Nah. While the MBA will get beefed up, the MBP will keep it's design. The reason for this is all the ports and the optical drive, both of which are still needed by Professionals (Who are the target market for the MBP).
It might get slightly thinner, but I doubt it. And it will most certainly not be similar to the Air

One of the reasons I'm asking is because an 2year extended warranty costs R2300. So if you buy a new MBP every year. you might actually almost be better off. But it's sort of tricky as well.

Yeah i tend to agree with you, but then its a gamble either way i guess.

My guess is they will keep the macbook pro's the same while adding a 15 inch macbook air to the existing macbook air line.

Yep, I suspect that as well

I think people over play the need for an optical drive. There are so many other options, including digital downloads. Remember that Apple only designs its products for the first world.

The design advantages in removing the optical drive are massive. Just open your MBP and see how it takes up more than quarter of the internals. A complete waste of space for most. Apple will just tell you to buy an external drive.

And it is no coincidence that OS X is moving to download only.

for regular home use no optical drive is ok...

But for video editing etc it makes no sense... They are effectively saying that all editors must now buy an external CD Drive, and most music comes on CD's too(especially if it is a mix for a show or something like that)

Yes, externals. And no, most music comes from iTunes in Apple's eyes.

Just look at the recent trends, MBP becoming the consumer notebook (i.e. no macbook), Mac Pro being ignored, Final Cut Pro being nerfed and the invasion of iOS, Apple is going more and more consumer.

i doubt they will remove the optical drive anytime soon, but then its maybe just me...

I think there are still many CD buyers out there, more than we can imagine, cause Itunes doesn't have all the CD's, for me in a Video Editing environment i think of my mac as a tool i use to get my work done not something i use for personal use (very often), that being said anything i do personally i don't use optical media (except for work)

It's time to kill the optical drive.

This sounds very plausible.

Claims of redesigned MacBook Pro models continue to surface ahead of the official launch of Intel's Ivy Bridge chips, and Digitimes now reports that slimmer versions of the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro are currently in production. Notably, the report claims that the MacBook Pro line will remain distinct from the MacBook Air line, with the new MacBook Pro models losing their optical drives but retaining more advanced specs than seen in the MacBook Air.

The MacBook Pro will no longer have an optical drive enabling thinner designs, the sources indicated. Despite the slim profile, the new devices will feature more advanced specs than the MacBook Air in terms of CPU performance and storage capacity, the sources said.

Production for the next-generation MacBook Pro has already begun with shipments to Apple kicking off in March, the sources noted. Monthly shipments will eventually climb to 900,000 units from the 100,000-150,000 units targeted initially, the sources said.

The report is very similar to one issued by Digitimes several weeks ago, but the new report offers the explicit claim that production on the new models has indeed begun.

I think they'll expand the Air line to include a 15" but hopefully they'll leave leave the MBPs CD and HDD alone.

You guys hi-jacked this thread...
If Apple revamps the line to exclude large hdd's and cd/dvd drives then your machine might be more sought after by those of us who need them. ;)

Wait for the new design -- my bet is that the MBP range is either radically reduced or merged with the Air

Don't think you read what I wrote originally...

The likelihood that the design is going to be altered is great; this will have a greater impact on the resale value IMO -- hence unless urgent, rather wait or set your sale value expectations lower.
