Just looking now it seems there are more powerful processors available.

I am going for the 17" i7 2.66ghz, I see there is now a 2.8ghz available in the Apple store...

How big of a difference in speed is this?

I'm not sure it justifies the price hop of ANOTHER extra $200

I love those machines. Just hope they'll add better graphics soon.

Incremental CPU increase will not make a big difference. Rather save your money. An SSD will make a big difference.

Apparently it might be some new processor with a bigger cache or something...

Not likely to improve your experience unless you're running throughput kernels on the machine.

Not much of an increase. They're due for something bigger so I'm waiting until early in the new year to see what they announce.

Thing is my Aunt is coming over for Christmas and she wont be able to bring one next year.

Spend the extra money on upgrading your RAM.

I'm thinking I can do the RAM and maybe a hardrive upgrade at a later date once I have the macbook, but the processor is there to stay...

Maybe look at the resolution. I would take the high-res screen with anti-glare (£120 option in the UK) if I was buying one now.

I got the top of the range CPU when I got mine, but not just for the cpu, also for the bigger hdd, etc.

My advice:
If you have the money, and want/need a better cpu, go for it. You won't regret it :)

However, I would really like a SSD in mine, as I don't like having to worry about my hdd getting bad sectors from being moved around the whole time. It happened to me, it's just not worth the worry. (sudden movement I think, like picking it up fast. I never bumped it tho, never ever)
SSD's are faster in speed, but also smaller in comparison, so I'd say a SSD and 500gb or so nice 2.5" external hdd could be a good combo. My Transcend 25M is great.

Also, if you're going to be running VM's, you may need more than 4GB of ram if you want best results.

Hope that helped...

|Looks like I'm gonna have to pay sales tax, it's like $300 more than I originally planned. !!!

:(:(

I will have to go for a more budget processor, or a 15"...
