Ive just spent 15k on pc bits etc at the moment its just 15k of junk plastic and metal, , got a guy to come set it up but cant get it to work, are there any gurus that i can pay to help me?

Listen, are you sure it's plugged in and turned on? Is the switch on the case connected to the right pins on the motherboard? Are you sure the PSU is correctly hooked up? If yes to all, probably a dead PSU.

Try to test the power supply on another computer to make sure that it works. Is the power supply strong enough for the PC - what is the wattage rating ?

Then :
1) Make sure that memory chips are properly seated. Take out one at a time to check.
2) Switch connections correct ?
3) USB connections correct ?
4) Make sure that all power connections are correctly connected - do you have the 4-pin 12 volt plug connected ?
5) CPU correctly inserted, with paste, etc.
6) Hard disk connections shouldn't affect booting up, but check anyway. Maybe disconnect hard disks until system shows BIOS setup.
7) Video card correctly installed ?
Etc.

NB : Switch power off every time before removing cards, memory, etc.

If you feel strongly about chucking everything, I'm willing to drive there and pick it up for...R5k? :p

LOL dont give up so easy!!
I took my friend to buy him a new pc. Just the box. Came to about 10k. So i drop him off at home with all the parts since he's confident to build it himself.. So ok.
Get a phone call the next day. His mobo not picking up the ram. So it tell him to wiggle it and make sure they all seated, etc. Nothing so drive through to him and take the mobo to get replaced. At the store we test the new mobo. Seems to be ok. Get to his house and set it all up.. Nothing.. Basically dead! Both him an i are confused:confused:! So try everything from cmos reset to different PSU's. And nothing. So while i'm on the net trying to research this "problem" he decided to try reset the cmos himself..
So removes the jumper. then places it back on the 3 pin fan connector!! Which was located right next to the cmos jumper. As i turn around to see his "progress" i see him plug it in and as he hits power a chip on fire literally shoots off past his head!! Funniest thing i've seen!! :D He was so shocked and confused! LOL the look on his face was priceless:wtf:! So we took the mobo back claiming it was dead :)

Now he's worried that all other components are fried, so i take his ram and test it. Works 100% but couldn't test CPU. We test GF card on old machine and PSU as well, all working. Get his new mobo (from another shop) and retry the build. Nope still dead. So i decide to take the CPU back as after a whole lot of testing we concluded that could be the only thing as we couldn't test it.

Shop sent in the CPU to intel. And got a new one back the following week. We assemble it, and whalla!! It works!
So finally after a month we got his PC working~!!! :D

If you want you can drop it off with me to look at but I'm 40km north up the coast.

i had the exact same problem as you, check and see what power connector your motherboard needs, there are two options, a 4pin connecter and an 8 pin connector, when i first built my pc i plugged the 4 pin in instead of the 8 pin and nothing happened, so give that a go and do a double chech to make sure all of the cables are plugged in correctly and that the power supply switch is on :)

you should seriously give it another go, there is no better feeling than going through all this trouble and then all of a sudden it works, i wouldnt give up yet... your just frustrated and that happens to most of us especially with computer parts :/ did you use an anti static wrist strap or ground yourself while building it?

Once you have done it a few times, it sort of becomes routine. You also learn most of the pitfalls along the way.

But I think that every time someone fires up a fancy new box their heart skips a beat.

Very true!

if i cant get the parts tested, its going in the bin, nothing else i can do but get furious with a piece of plastic
it might as well be an alien jigsaw puzzle

Don't be so despondent, ask around, there are many people around who know how to do this.

Think ! Do you know a savvy student ? Or even a schoolboy who has built his own computer ?

Could you provide us with the part names and their specs? Maybe you have something that's incompatible?

unfortunately not, il try incredible connections or pczone on monday, hopefully they can test the bits
'Let me give it a try, I'm going to do it for a job soon anyways, and If I come right with it I won't charge you '
really appreciate the help guys, i think i should get the parts tested first so i dont waste your time

all of it was brand spanking new out the box

Most likely the PSU :)

Hmm. I'm no expert although I can and do build my own PCs. My feeling is that 'cos the components are new they're probably OK, which means you're more likely to have connected the MB wrongly. Go through the MB manual's board connection diagram very carefully and make sure you've done it right (like those little pins for the on-off switch which are a bugger). If you still don't get at least a light on the MB, check the power supply (does it have an on-off switch on the back?). If possible, test the PSU on another PC. I'm sure it's something really simple, so check everything. Be patient. It took you time to get the bucks together, so take the time to get it right.

Don't go to IC 'cos they most likely won't do it for you there and then and when they do get around to it, charge a lot. Rather take it to a small PC store who are more likely to be able to help you straight away.
