MACS what to consider

why are they so expinsve?
What - Dells? Dont know - nothing special about them ;)

:D - Have a look at the spec link I posted and you'll see - the new mac pro's are pretty good.

What's wrong with openoffice on intel? I havent tried it personally (which is why I ask) but their website offers an intel version - http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/2.0.x-intel.html
Oh - I don't think that was there when I was looking for it, so I just bought Office - which I have to admit from my limited use of it (someone else uses the mac as the primary computer) I have found much better than Office 2003 (it is 2004 for mac) - espesially when combined with the apple remote when presenting with powerpoint and extented desktop....

I agree - I got Office 2004 and it's not bad at all. I've also started using iWork a fair bit and as soon as they come out with a spreadsheet I'll stop updating MS Office.
no macs man :D
There's no official Apple presence here in SA so the resellers can pretty much charge what they please. I get the majority of my apple hardware from the states.

reason why i'm asking is because they are so bloody expensive like 40k for a mac desktop for that money 3d software shouldn't lag or crash even.

at work we have macs and PC's

you can get CS2 products for mac and pc - same goes for most Macromedia Products (macromedia products are now adobe anyway)

files created on MAC can be viewed on a windows system and vice versa if you are running the same applications (ie Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, Freehand, etc)

Some applications run considerably faster on MAC and vice versa.

eg Photoshop is about par regardless of what Mac users say it's the same. Flash has always run faster on PC expecially at runtime check the flash forums at adobe for confimation.

All in all pc has caught up with MAC and the only place where MAC will slaughter PC is with video editing.

you will have problems with fonts when working with both machines as macs have their own derivitive if you use OSx on your mac.

you can not use 3dMAX on a MAC unless you use MAC's windows thingy and even then it defeats the purpose.

WHY are macs so expensive, because you are buying a quality product. Although i prefer using Windows and AMD chips, MAC systems are flawless in design, the OS is very simple to use and their hardware is standardised meaning there are seldom problems when you purchase a MAC. There is no running around for mother board drivers graphic drivers, etc etc.

I rate their laptops over any PC laptop on earth. Good value for money.

Why get a Mac

My 2c worth...

1/ You get to use OS X which means almost no crashes, secure firewall out of the box, no virusses to speak of, real multi-tasking, real memory management, real disk management and of course Expose.

2/ Run Windows as a dual boot or as a virtual machine.... mostly faster than windows runs on a similar dell pc

3/ You get to run OS X which means 22 sec boot time, even on a network. BTW thats from off to working, not the first splash screen.

4/ Neo-Office J - open office for mac without the hassle of X11. Create, open, edit and share your office format documents with any windoze user with no problems.

5/ You get to run OS X which means you get a webserver, fileserver, ftpserver etc up and running after 3 clicks... really.

6/ Flip4Mac lets you run divX, and all windows media from inside quicktime... no need for buggy windows media player or ie.

7/ You get to run OS X which means you get iLife - Mail, Calendar, Addressbook, iTunes, iWeb, iMovie, iDVD, GargeBand, iWeb that all work together right out the box. Print direct to PDF from any app.

8/ Spotlight lets you find anything, anywhere on your machine, on the fly with a couple of key strokes. Front Row turns your mac into a multimedia player, plus you can share your music with 4 other networked pc's/macs.

9/ You get a really sexy looking box that every else wants... whether its a mini only slightly bigger than a stack of CD'd or a 2.5cm thick metal laptop with a trackpad that scrolls and clicks properly, so you'll never need a mouse.

10/ Did I mention you get OS X?:D

BTW why don't you look at the 20" iMac for R15,000. It's 2.0 Ghz Core Duo and should be able to run your Adobe apps no problem. Mac Pros have serious firepower at a price... the type of price that means you have to do a irr calc.

Here is another 10 good reasons to switch.
