Macworld Keynote

I wouldnt mind if they port the new facial recognition to Aperture (like they did with the stacks).

I wonder if we can trust that 7+ hours? I'm very skeptical, even with seperate gfx but the drive is still 7200RPM and it's a 2.93 Core 2 Duo not a ULV model CPU. Unless Apple managed to suspend to laws of chemistry and physics.....

In many ways, the battery is different from that of the original 17-inch Macbook Pro. Other laptops use cylindrical cells in their batteries – Duracell AA batteries, for instance – while Apple customized its own shapes. Instead of using lithium ion cells, as is common in most laptops, the new batteries are made out of lithium polymer, which holds a longer charge but are also more expensive.

I'd say give it a fair chance. If my MacBook is anything to go by, this should not be impossible. I get around 4-5 hours in regular use, and if I bring it to work, where it stands idle from time to time (i.e. power saving kicks in), it can last a full 9 hour shift.

I understand that Lithium POLYMER's advantage is a custom (small form factor) shape the battery can assume but it otherwise has disadvantages.
My 4 year old Creative Zen Vision portable video player has a Li Polymer
replaceable battery.

That's with Airport off? With it on (and actively using it ) I'm getting much less time.

I saw it as well today and it really made my day :D
They really do like thin things; thin notebooks, thin CEO, thin product line... thin air..... :p

Time to gain some weight Steve, this stuff beats fruit any day.

regular use for me is actively using the machine, either with wifi on, or using my 3G dongle. With wifi on, I get 4-5 hours while actively using the machine for browsing/writing/reading/viewing.

The 3G dongle knocks about an hour off the batter life, unfortunately. Using the bluetooth mouse also has a detrimental effect, but not too much - maybe 30 minutes? Using development in Aperture runs the battery down much quicker. I guess that's one area where having a real GPU would help - much more efficient processing.

If you look at the bottom of the Apple website, they've usually got some fine print in barely readable type - they say Wireless off, screen dimmed to 50% etc.. That would get you better battery duration.

Yeah, I usually dim the screen somewhat. 50% is still fairly bright, enough for all situations except outside in sunshine. At home at night, if I darken the room, I can read absolutely fine with 10% brightness.

Ja, that might be the determining factor; I like BRIGHT screens. Will time this tonight

ctrl+alt++8 - for your night time viewing pleasure. :)

I'm just watching the keynote address now. iPhoto with the face recognition and GPS integration is pretty nifty. I think it's time for mum to get a Mac...

OMW! That's fantastic! It would be even better if it didn't invert the video and images too :)
lol - yeah it is a bit problematic if you're working with images but it helps take the strain off the old eyes. :)

Nice for bed time reading. That's one of the handful of things I miss from my my Linux desktop - the cross-application dark themes that leave images and video alone.
