Magistrate sleeps through case

Well, it suggests tihat the magistrate already knew the outcome. Anyone looked at bribery?

 was he getting ready to screw the defense?

He must have seen some1 who was really hot, or had a little sumthing waiting for him in his chambers for recess and wanted to get ready. :D

dominic Just a quick question. In your years of work how many times has the magistrate/judge fell asleep?
when i first started practising law i did a lot of time in the Magistrate's Courts but never came across a sleeping one (arrogant, rude, clueless, incompetent, power-maddened etc sure but not actually sleeping)

the Mag Court is one of the primary reasons that i decided not to practise law and went to work as a fisherman

now that i have returned i have made it a point never to go back (although i have represented some criminal accused persons in the Mag Crt on telecomms issues which is a hoot - only time i have ever seen a magistrate smile is when the charges are withdrawn on the [unsaid] basis that nobody knows wtf is going on :) )

the standard of justice in the mag court - as pointed out above it is real grunt work and not a position i would adopt for all the tea in china

Would a significant salary increase attract better people, or is it just a stepping stone to being a judge?

From what's said here, I certainly hope these people don't end up as full judges.

The chewing of bubblegum is kinda a thing i do sometimes myself when i need to stay awake.
Kinda keeps you occupied when ure tired.

So it kinda sounds like she tried to at least do something about it to keep her awake, though doesn't sound like it worked.
The power of the sandman is too strooooooooooong

Judges are normally selected from experienced attorneys or advocates - it is not very often that a magistrate is selected for a Judge position.

As far as I know a Magistrate's salary is in the range of R500 000 per annum ?

The case was about someone who stole two pigs from a neghbour - I doubt very much that they were in the High / Supreme court. :)

It's apartheid's fault I tell you. :D

The chewing of the bubble gum is a physically exhausting excercise and thus explains the short naptime in order to recharge energy levels.

And that's considered a poor income? I know a lot of highly skilled professionals who earn 20-30% of that if they're lucky.

I was going to say the same thing! Nothing shabby about that salary, especially for a magistrate in my opinion.
