Started our first "progression" run last night, not that we made any progress. Lowest we got him down to was about 54%. I know theres some of you that might have downed him by now so looking for some advice.
What raid setup are you running? i.e 2 tanks nr of dps and healers?
We tried a couple of different strategies and here are some of the problems we seem to have. The little worms dont seem to be going down quick enough even with all dps putting out more than 10k, also using 3 healers.

Now should we be using 2 healers instead of 3? cus as far as I can tell this would be impossible for any of the 2/3 we already have.

Should the little worms be kited by an off tank/hunter or simply be tanked by a tank? Saw videos using both tactics.

Thanks for any advise you can give:)

Downed him a few weeks ago.

Use two tanks and three healers. DPS should do 10k+ or the fight just takes forever and the inexperienced healers have mana problems.

There should be two ranged markers, left and right. All ranged should stand in the same one - All ranged immediately need to move out of the fiery circle he places on the ground every few seconds, and go to the other marker. If they don't, kick them the hell out.

If the massive AOE he does covers the half of the room where everyone's standing, then they need to move to the other side immediately.

The adds that spawn should be kited; DPS need to burn them down fast and focus on the boss. With 5 guys meant to be AOE'ing, I don't see why it's a problem to be honest. Something doesn't sound right.

Bloodlust when Magmaw goes into the second phase (He plunges forward). Healers should take it easy during that phase.

To me it just sounds like people aren't AOE'ing properly. Didn't play enough Wrath? :)

You only need 1 tank on Magmaw.

Otherwise what Tranq said.
As long as the whole group stays together the worms will all stick together making it a lot easier to handle.

Tips:
Pets cannot be infested, so they can go ape in there. If you have a Warlock, let him spec Demo for this fight - using his Felguard. Pet Bladestorm plus Lock AoE = 25k DPS. Hunter Frost trap & AoE + Frost spec Mage are all good things.
Since the last patch Melee (Preferably have no more than 2) can stay on the boss.

Save DPS CDs for the exposed head phase ofcourse.

We tried the 1 tank approach and it did not work. The armor debuff the tank gets required a second tank. So what we did was have 1 tank on Magmaw and the other rounding up the parasites. The tanks would swap after each slump phase negating the armor debuff. It is possible to do it with one tank but I believe a lot of caster AoE stacking will be needed. On my server there is a severe lack of casters, especially Mages and Warlocks. It is very important to get the group of parasites down before the next group spawns. If you are not getting them down, you have a DPS problem.

What they said. Pretty easy loot boss if your ppl at least have half a brain :p

Have a look @ the following, might help. Thou some strategies might differ, the general idea is the same. Most importantly. Stack for aoe healing, move quick as a group from side 2 side, chain him. If your healers for some reason have mana problems, get them to drink Potion of Concentration when he is chained :)
As above I also don't see how adds killing can be a problem.

We downed him last week for the first time. Pretty easy boss if people keep focus on what's happening :p

I think we also only had 1 tank and 3 healers. Lots of AoE DPS needed to get rid of the worm thingies quickly before they jump onto someone.

Killed him first week , The biggest problem is probably the adds for most guilds. best solution is to get a Frost DK with chilblain or however u spell it to kite ( DONT LET THEM MELEE ANYONE! ). they do TONS of damage and combine it with a few more aoes , the worms are very simple. also grouping ur range up on 1 shot an moving left/right for the pillar helps healing alot. but this only works if your raiders are able to actually move. else it jus causes problems. also , before the boss's head goes back up off the spike. melee shud step back as its an aggro reset. ( depending on 10 or 25 u can choose to have only 1 person assisting the DK on adds , we had the DK + myself ( hunter ) doing adds and it worked like a charm.

1 tank, 3 healers.

1 dk dps or tank, kiting adds, and slowing killing with howling blast, he plays the main roll, get that right ,the rest is easy.

no one dps the adds, except the dk.

(DPS perspective of OP's post)

We don't have DKs or Locks,

Our biggest problems last night were the adds getting to the raid imo, we had 2x groups (1 behind the boss comprised of healers + melee) and the ranged dps standing 15-30yards away from the boss for it's Pillar of Flame... Most of the adds would come after the ranged group with 1-2 going after the healers. The debuff + aoe damage from the worms definitely made the healer's job harder

To the forumites who have downed him, what are your thoughts on everyone in the group except 1 (say a hunter) standing in melee range, with the hunter standing 20-25yards for the Pillar of Flame? So far reports have said that if anyone is standing outside of melee range, they take the pillar...I have read the discussion on Tankspot which isn't 100% conclusive yet.

the pillar PREFERS range so if you have everyone in melee , it will go for melee. u cant just free for all aoe them. as people will get aggro who shudnt , and if even 1 hits a person , it makes 2 , then those 2 make 4 and so on. you MUST have someone to kite. best bet is cover the room in earthbind totems/frost traps an have a hunter kite them if you lack a DK

Thanks for all the advise so far. Going again tonight so I'll let you guys know how it went. We have 2 hunters so gonna try using the pets a bit more on adds and maybe switch myself to dps and see how that goes with 1 tank.
The rest I suppose is up to people moving in time else its a fail:S

Our set up:
- 1 Tank
- 3 Healers
- 1 Ranged DPS to be the Pillar of Flame target
- Rest of DPS standing with healers right next to boss opposite side to tank
- We found that having at the very least 3 decent AoE classes was pretty much required to get the parasites down fast enough

Strat:
- Tank pulls and positioned himself on right side of boss
- Everyone else except for the Pillar of Flame target goes and stands on the left side as close as possible to the edge by the boss
- PoF target stands as far as possible from boss and gets ready for PoF
- When PoF is cast, PoF target shift away from it and AoE team goes crazy on the parasites
- Parasites should go down fast enough for PoF target to get enough time to go back into position for the next one
- When Magmaw gets chained and impaled the first time, we use Bloodlust/Timewarp to get as much DPS in as possible as things get a little crazy in the next iterations of the phases
- Rince and repeat until dead

Extra things to note:
- I was our PoF target (Hunter), this allowed me to drop an Ice Trap just before the PoF was due to be cast and helped control and DPS the parasites with more ease
- Our Holy Paladin cast Beacon on me to help keeping me up as I took a lot of unavoidable damage and wasn't benefiting from all the AoE healing that the rest of the raid was getting
- Staking of the rest of the raid on a single spot needs to be very tight in order to guaranty the PoF landing on the designated target. The only time when this can go wrong is when Magmaw covers half the room with fire and people don't shift and get back in position quick enough

Ok so our best attempt last night had him down at 29%, I was the 2nd person on chains, I clicked and got thrown back off immediately :'(
Adds were going down fast enough and dps looked awesome, now the only problem is getting the damn healers to move when they're supposed to and maybe upping their game as healing seems to be a bit low especially once the tank gets mangled and gets the reduced armor debuff.

Aw the old moving thing where u see when ppl lack half a brain or are still stuck in wotlk where u could stand there and finish your cast 1st, then run :p

Regarding the tank, just use 2 of them if you have a problem. We just use 2 tanks ourselves, it gives them something to do, our dps is fine & we'll be using 2 tanks on the next trash & all these farm bosses except Atramedes anyway, so there is really no point in switching around until we speed through to him.

Best of luck for your next go @ him. You are welcome to pm me if there is any questions regarding healing.

one key mechanic that people dont understand is they wait for the pillar of flame to appear before moving, Magmaw will put the graphic on the ground under a random person (at range) then there is a random time period before pillar of flame actually erupts. this random time is your move time.
Your boss mods will tell you when he is casting it, then you can move. no boss mod will be able to predict the "Random" time until the POF appears.

Regarding Boss mods, do you and your players a favor and get hold of VBM - Vision Boss Mod (the other really sux atm)

Most or all as far as I know still on DBM, will have a look at VBM later tonight thanx. Apart from getting the achieve on my pala I dont really mind switching to my mage to help with the adds in that fight:) There's always next time once the dps can handle it without my extra bit of aoe.
