GWM no longer offers an H5 with four-wheel drive, but even if 4x2 would suffice, the H5 lacks the Scorpio's seating capacity and features. Then there's something like the outgoing Renault Duster diesel 4x4, but that's a much smaller vehicle... Alternatively, you'll have to consider a used vehicle – for similar money you can get a 3- to 4-year old (previous shape) Toyota Fortuner 3.0 D-4D 4x4 with more than 100 000km on the odo.
Further sweetening the deal, the Scorpio comes backed with a 3-years/100 000 km warranty and 3-years/70 000km service plan as standard. Servicing intervals are lengthy at 20 000km.
To summarise... you may end up buying a Scorpio because of its exceptional pricing, but there's more to it than that. Rugged, surprisingly refined and efficient, while offering good potential seating space/practicality for a variety of uses, the Scorpio S11 is possibly one of the few cars on the market that could genuinely be described as a bargain.

The Karoo Edition retains the 2,2-litre turbodiesel engine found in the S10 Pik Up, which is good for 103 kW at 3 750 r/pm and 320 Nm of torque between 1 500 and 2 800 r/pm. The mHawk powerplant is coupled to a six-speed manual ‘box.
According to Mahindra, some R28 000 worth of extra features have been included as standard with this particular model. These include a tow bar, nudge bar, roll bar and tonneau cover. Rain deflectors on the windows and wheel arch mouldings are standard fitments, too. To finish it off, Karoo decals have been applied to the exterior.
Mahindra says this limited-run bakkie is after the company’s award-winning, locally filmed advertisement where an adventure seeker goes in search of a farmer’s lost lamb.

The Karoo Edition will not only celebrate these Mahindra milestones with additional accessories, but it heralds the introduction of the S6 specification level in the double cab range. In doing so, it has enabled Mahindra to offer a double cab at R299 999 for the 4x2 and R329 999 for the 4x4 version.

4. Nissan Micra Active 1,2 Vista: 13,52 seconds
Based on the previous-generation model and employing a single overhead cam engine, the Micra Active is an attractive value proposition. Of course, it’s no performance machine, as evidenced by its tested 0-100 km/h time…
3. Opel Crossland X 1,2T Enjoy: 13,53 seconds
The Opel Crossland X isn’t the quickest SUV around (though it’s obviously not built for straight-line speed), with its turbocharged 1,2-litre engine having plenty of body to lug around. The German firm claims a zero to 100 km/h time of 10,6 seconds, but the Crossland X struggled to get anywhere near that chiefly thanks to the baggy shift action of its manual gearbox.

Late in 2018, Mahindra South Africa added a “Karoo Edition” S6 derivative to its Pik Up range. And now the SA arm of the Indian automaker has rolled out a second locally built “Karoo Edition” double-cab variant, this time based on the flagship S10 trim level.
Of course, the S10 specification level already includes items such as satellite navigation, cruise control and a multi-function steering wheel, while the limited-edition Karoo package adds blacked-out alloy wheels, a black nudge bar and a black roll bar.
Mahindra has also thrown in a tonneau cover, flared rear wheel arches (to complement those up front) and a wind deflector kit for the windows. The special edition model is offered in either white or silver.
The S10 Karoo Edition is priced at R337 999 in 4×2 guise and R368 999 in 4×4 form, representing increases of R5 000 over the standard S10 derivatives. A four-year/120 000 km warranty and five-year/90 000 km service plan are included in the price.
“The Mahindra Pik Up S10 Karoo Edition is an encore to the special S6 Karoo Edition, which was launched in December last year and which sold out very quickly. With the higher S10 specification level, this model is sure to sell out as fast,” said Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa.

“Even with the additional specifications, the S10 Pik Up Karoo Edition is still one of the most affordable quality double-cab bakkies on the market. And with our South African plant now fully operational, we can ensure that every Pik Up is perfectly suited to local market needs,” said Gupta.

Mahindra welcomes the S10 Karoo Edition Pik Up to the South African market which closely follows the introduction of the S6 Karoo Edition in December 2018. It will be available in limited numbers.
However, in S10 guise, features such as satellite navigation, cruise control and a multifunction steering wheel are standard fare. This Limited Edition model also benefits from a black cosmetic package which includes blacked-out alloy wheels, a dark nudge bar and a dark roll bar.
A tonneau cover, wind deflectors on the front and rear windows and flared wheel arches further complement the look. The S10 Karoo Edition is offered in either white or silver body colours.
Buyers will also have the choice between a Karoo Edition cosmetic package or a colour-coded Beekman canopy, for the same price.
The Mahindra S10 Karoo Edition is powered by a 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine with 103 kW and 320 Nm of torque on offer and comes mated with a 6-speed manual transmission. It is available in both in 4x2 and 4x4 guise.
The Mahindra S10 Karoo Edition Pik Up is built at Mahindra’s new assembly facility in Durban, KZN where the entire Pik Up range is now produced. You can expect to see more locally-produced, special edition models from Mahindra in the future.
