Hi, I have a, stand alone PC, connecting via wireless router to Telkom - mail box with Telkom. When sending/downloading mail I think my connection is being subject to some kind of brute attack or excessive pinging, with the result the connection bombs out. I have firewall, on both the router & S/W on PC (Bitdefender). I have gone to one of these online testing sites (GRC-I think) and subjected my PC to their test and it comes out safe 100% - no open ports, does not respond to any ping/requests so I am in the dark with what I can do. Phoning Telkom is not helpful - cause for some strange reason you just cannot get past their first line call center. Seems like it a embarrassment for them to acknowledge they cannot fix the problem. My firewall has captured some strange IP addresses that are not SA.

disconnect your adsl line for 10 minutes, restart your router and reconnect. You should get a new IP address. If you're experiencing exactly the same thing with a different IP, then it unlikely to be an attack. It seems more likely that your firewall is blocking your outgoing mail ports (SMTP - pro'lly port 25) or your software firewall is blocking the mail application. Check your logs.

You can't be under attack. You pop your mail off telkom correct? Therefore you aren't actually running a SMTP server open to the world so its impossible for someone to be attacking you. They might be pinging your IP with a DDos attack but its very unlikely. Like the poster says above reset your router and get a new IP. But chances are 99.99% its nothing to do with an attack
