Has anyone made the move ridding themselves of Exchange in exchange (no pun intended) for an open source alternative like Zimbra?

I'm looking for a solution that handles mail, calendar, contacts and webmail access. Zimbra seems to be a popular open source solution for this, does anybody else have any other suggestions or experience with this sort of thing?

Have you looked at Horde and Simple Groupware? I haven't used them in anger but they seem to have good feature lists for Free groupware solutions.

I'm working with the professional version of Zimbra at the moment which stacks up pretty well functionally against exchange but judging by the licensing costs I don't think is really any cheaper.

Zarafa is also another one worth looking at but if I recall correctly, the feature set for the community version was a little limited.

I'm busy downloading the open source edition to try out, looks like it has everything I need according to this: http://www.zimbra.com/products/compare_products.html

We're in the process of moving from Exchange to Zimbra. Project should start within the next 2 or so weeks.

Watch this space.

Will do, same please! Keen to see what the migration process is like and what to watch out for come migration time.

On a side not the opensource version of Zimbra offers no activesync or calendar sharing.
The migration process can be done in multiple ways or alternatively one can use the old skewl PST mecahnism.
That being said there is an opensource version of AS available but your not gonna have an easy time if you make it to "Non-Standard".

Theres also the Zarafa support for Zimbra AS but this is limited in functionality. While Zimbra is a decent alternative to Exchange your also looking at hardware requirements. The basic process for upgrades system or otherwise need to be done with a very cautious approach.

All and all its not rocket science to setup.

Conclusion: Zimbra is ok... For now... In hosted exchange and split domain environments its decent... Become familiar with Tomcat and LDAP if you want to be a power user :)

What your looking for is a Collaborative piece of groupware :) Keep your eyes on the horizon :)

PS: I have tested a list of groupware software... its still gonna be a while
