Maimane versus James

Mmusi will win as the popular leader but appears to offer no substance. I hope they keep James and let him steer strategy and as he (James) said, the DA is in strategic drift and something has to be done about it. I think their strategy to consolidate all of the small parties willing to consolidate was a good one but now they need to go big or go home. They have the WC in the bag, now it's time to go for a metro or two outside the WC. EC seems ripe for the taking with all the infighting in the ANC there.

If the DA takes the EC it will be under the leadership of Athol (and all the work he has done) and Veliswa, not James (who is not as popular within the party and has done almost nothing in the EC). I would be interested to see if James still plays a major roll after federal congress this weekend.

James (who is not as popular within the party).

I gather as much and James appears opposed to both Athol and Mmusi. I wonder if that opposition is just for this election or he feels they are genuinely doing something untoward. And that call to disclose funding sources was too close to ANC type cat fighting. It looks like he thinks Athol is the power behind Mmusi and behind those two there is another power.

And by the EC I mean the metro as the province is only due in 2019.

Nope its real, started with Lindiwe afaik. I heard (not validated) that he played a part in the friction between Helen and Lindiwe and that he possibily was the one leaking selective quotes to people in the media about what was happening in the federal meetings to push his own agenda.

No, Athol is not the power behind Mmusi, but they are friends and support each other. Mmusi is his own center of power.

Ive never heard of James before now.

Athol has a lot of skill behind his name and Mmusi should be thankful for having him on the same side. That said, Maimane is the right guy for the job. Even if he doesnt have the political knowledge, he's someone you can listen to and expect that he can take advice from the right advisers. Trollip doesn't need to be the leader in order for the DA to succeed and would make an excellent VP.

Ive met him a couple of times over the last several years and chatted to him, but unless you are in the party and know who the federal exec is, its unlikely you will know him. He is not as active at grass roots level like Mmusi is.

I totally agree. Its not just Athol, there are many good leaders that will be advising Mmusi.

The DA have created a strong institution. Im confident whoever leads will do a decent job.

I notice that James is supposed to have joined the DA in 2008 and was quickly elected to federal chairman.

What? He has been involved since the DA were the PFP.... He was the executive director of the DP in 1992.

This what the DA's site says about him,
After spending 12 years as a Trustee of the New York based Ford Foundation, Dr James entered public life during 2008 and was elected to Parliament on 22 April 2009. His constituency is Mitchells Plain.

And oh, I heard about the 2008 on SAFM yesterday, they have been running profiles of the contestants for the DA's leadership position.

Ag please Wilmot James, the bill of rights is a piece of crap if it doesn't protect my life from others who have already taken lives and wants to and would do it again without hesitation.

Maimane is not yet ready to lead DA still immature to be a leader of political party, maybe after 6 years he can be a leader, if I was a DA person I would vote for James.

Yip, have a look at their CV's on the DA's wiki... Maimane hasn't done anything. In contrast James has done a lot.

I know that Maimane has already created a lot of division in the party... he is too preachy, too much talk.

Think for a minute if there had been a referendum in 1994 proposing that white people be stripped of all their possessions, would it have been a good plan? Just because people want something doesn't mean that it should be a law.

I'm just saying the bill of rights is useless if it doesn't protect the innocents and is used to protect the evil people.

And I'm saying that allowing the people to vote on fundamental rights is slippery slope. You may not like the bill of rights, but it doesn't mean that the population should be allowed to alter it.

Is he doing the same job that Ryan Coetzee was doing back in 06? I met Ryan a few times when my flatmate worked for the DA's head office under Leon's leadership and De Lille still had her own party whom some people voted for. ;)

Oh my bad, you are correct. I was looking at the wrong James :P I take my last statement back completely. My apologies.
