I received a Windows DVD with the serial key and with this ...
MAK Activations - Used/Available: 4006 / 4500

Does this mean there is a finite amount of times I can install the OS before the key will not work anymore?

Yes, MAK have a max count.

Use KMS if you need more, KMS activates after 25 PC's only. But will activate any other machine thereafter, does not contant MS for checking.

On my server 2008 DVD

it says MAK Activations - Used/Available:2/50.

Does this mean I can only install server 48 times?

As I understand it you can have 50 servers running at the same time.

Misunderstood

Example:
You buy 1xOffice 2010 Professional through your MS partner. You get a 50 MAK key

This means you may:
*Install Office on 1 pc
*Reinstall and activate up to 50times through the internet, before needing to phone MS

Nope I think you misunderstood:

Each MAK has a predetermined number of allowed activations, based on your Volume Licensing agreement. To increase your MAK activation limit, please contact your Microsoft Activation Center.

So you just repeated the example.

Assuming he bought a Single Server 2008 license:

He sure as balls is not allowed to run 50servers at the same time,he is however allowed to re-activate his Single server 50 times before needing to phone the Activations Center

But as far as I know he works for a school so it's probably the schools Volume Licensing. MAK keys are only used in Volume Licensing.

You can purchase MAK keys on an Open Value agreement. My office PC is using an Office 2010 Pro MAK ( 30 activations ),and the license agreement is for 10 licenses only

licensing.microsoft.com shows how many licenses and activations your agreement allows for, however don't assume activations = licenses

But in my case, what does the (Used/Available: 2/50 - server 2008) mean? Or Used/Available: 4006/4500 with Win 7 or 5/1000 with Office 2010?

You right but does the other activations not allow for truing up? So you buy 10 licenses they give you a key for 30 activations. So in other words if you employ more then 10 people you can activate them and then at the end of the year you just have to true up with MS and give them the new numbers.
