Making gemsquash

my mom made gemsquash almost every Sunday while I was growing up.. cut them in half, scoop out the seeds etc, fill with sweetcorn , and top with cheese and chilli powder, then bake in oven... hmmm.. the good old days

Drizzle halves with olive oil, and a bit of lemon pepper, wrap in tinfoil and cook on the braai until soft. Best way to eat gemsquash.

I started eating gemsquash regularly in winter... I'd make a cut so the halves are almost separated, chuck in microwave and 10 minutes later all done. Eat as is, I quite like the seeds actually.

Those steps are about as simple as it gets, but there were a few occasions I forgot about that cut... I found the resulting BOOM in the microwave got my heartrate up faster than any exercise I've ever tried. The first two times anyway, by the third time I was like eh, not again. Language would turn unsavoury after that once I got sight of the mess...

I just steam mine, but what I used to do is to cut it in half and put it in the oven with a dash of butter inside.

i tried something similar once - but into a microwave oven.

there were 2 god almighty bangs - like gunshots in my kitchen - I had to buy a new microwave oven the next day !

boil 'em for a bit, cut in half and eat with salt.
