Well... it was always Sir Fergie's dream... or so says this article...

Search for it on Goal.com you lazy gits said:
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he once tried to sign Milan legend Paolo Maldini, only to face an outright denial from the player's father.

The Scot explained that signing arguably the greatest defender of our time remained one of his unfulfilled dreams as a manager.

"I always wanted to get Paolo here but it was impossible," Ferguson said, according to The Sun.

"I met his father at a game and told him how much I'd love to have his son at United.

"Cesare smiled at me and said 'My grandfather was Milan, my father was Milan, I played for Milan and now my son is Milan'.

"And that was it - story over!"

Maldini went on to be a one-club man and retired in 2009, at the age of 40, after spending well over two decades with the Rossoneri.

Now THAT is priceless. Makes the heart warm dunnit?

From what i kno, the number 3 shirt is retired to the Maldini family. The only person that can wear that shirt at AC now is a Maldini. Its family history.

Why would the legend that is Paolo Maldini who played for the best club ever move to the crappest club?!? LOL Sir Alex, you would have needed a miracle sales pitch - but loved the way Maldini snr put it :)

FYI RM is the best every club due to the number of trophies they won etc.

@ Fishfly.... WHOOOOSH! I guess thats how you decide who to support then? hehe

ROFL incorrectus! I support United the very first match I watch was @ the age of 8 where I saw how Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister defend :)

dunno I'm a sucker for awesome defence - which also makes me a support of Italy :)

Now thats the first decent thing you said all day ;) hehehe

Second time Im hearing this, also heard Fergie_Fur had a fallout with Vibitch before the Leeds game, & Alex is looking at getting a temp defender for 3 months.

All media speculation

PS: you will never see someone last 41 years of age and play in the EPL! the epl is to dam fast!

Maybe, maybe not. HE was strong enough to play semi regularly at the age of 17 next to greats like Costacurta and Baresi at a time when the Italian league was the de facto best league in the world. I reckon he could have been a good player for any team if used sparingly... much like Giggs. Talent like that is ageless, not to mention the crappy positional sense of the majority of the English attackers. He could have been used next to a lightie to teach them the ropes and what not. Don't be so quick to judge based on generalizations.

Erm Teddy Sheringham played till he was 40 and 270 days :)
