Malema gets lashing from Zuma

President Jacob Zuma has come in full support of the ANC secretary -general Gwede Mantashe, who in recent weeks has been under attack from the ruling party's youth league.

In his political report which he presented to the ANC's National Executive Committee meeting last week, Zuma said: "An attack on the Secretary General hits at the belly of the ANC. It is totally unacceptable that the Secretary General of the ANC should be treated in this manner. We must not tolerate it"

His comments hit directly at the campaign launched by Malema and his youth league executive members, who in January declared that Mantashe would be removed as ANC secretary-general in 2012 when the ruling party holds its conference.

In his political overview Zuma also said there was also no need to attack ministers appointed by the ANC into cabinet. He singled out the youth league for its attack on Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan whom they said was an un-elected leader.

He warned the youth league and told them that "If you attack a Minister you are also attacking the President, as you are questioning his judgement in appointing that Minister".

"This culture of publicly attacking each other will become entrenched if we do not act against it. We will create an image of an organisation and country dogged by tension and infighting," Zuma said.
