African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) president Julius Malema lost votes for the ANC in minority communities, but the ANC will reprimand him about his comments behind closed doors because they were not in line with ANC policy.

"To say whites are criminals is not ANC policy," said ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe at a briefing at the ANC headquarters, Luthuli House in Johannesburg.

He admitted that comments by Malema cost the ruling party votes from minority groupings, but did not want to say how Malema will be held accountable for this.

"People would be switched off by comments they feel are racist, but we are all still too oversensitive," he said.

Local leaders of the ANC will, however, have to face the music if their regions performed badly during the elections, but President Jacob Zuma will escape responsibility for the drop in the ANC's vote by more than 2% in the local government elections, Mantashe said.

"This thing about Zuma is what we read in the media; there is not a debate about it in the ANC. I doubt it will be discussed by the NEC [national executive committee], it is not a major issue for the NEC this week. The newspapers who report on that are in a different world," Mantashe said.

Not so lucky
But regional leaders will not be so lucky.

"Leaders will be held accountable for the losses, but this is not a master-servant relationship. We will do an analysis of what went wrong, because there are more factors than just performance. Leaders will be part of that process," Mantashe said.

The ANC is puzzled by the fact that it failed to retain municipalities like Saldanha, which was named the best-run municipality in the Western Cape, while it failed to gain Theewaterskloof, which was named the worst-run municipality, and which remained in the hands of the Democratic Alliance (DA).

Really?

Mantashe bemoaned the retention of Midvaal and Baviaans by the DA, saying these are "psychological issues" rather than the ANC wanting to gain these municipalities for economic purposes.

He announced that Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma will head a task team that will sort out the unhappiness around the list processes in some areas. Shortly before the elections, Zuma promised to sanction by-elections over councillors who were found to be fraudulently added to lists.

I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark and say exactly the same way he has been held accountable for all the **** he's caused so far, i.e not at all. They'll just find something/someone else to blame.
 
Not sure why you guys are complaining, he will slowly but surely be the cause of the ANC's downfall.

The average score of all municipalities was 62 points in 2007. It has fallen to 48 in 2010.
The lowest-scoring municipality was Madibeng (Brits) with 16 points, followed by Westonaria and Richards Bay with 21 each. Though scoring a full 100 points is technically possible, the best- performing council in 2010 was Saldanha Bay with 87.

The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) on Wednesday denied that its president, Julius Malema, had cost the ANC minority votes, and said there was no need to find "scapegoats" for the drop in ANC support in last week's local government elections.

"It is a reality that, like in all the previous general and local government elections, the ANC has not enjoyed massive support from minorities, particularly white people," ANCYL spokesperson Floyd Shivambu said in a statement.

"The racial prejudices and stereotypes planted and cultivated by apartheid ideology of racism among many white people is a reality which should be confronted openly, and not searching for scapegoats on the outcomes of the recent past local government elections ...

"Looking for immediate scapegoats is neither helpful, nor visionary."

ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe conceded on Tuesday that there were communities which would be "switched off" by ANC leaders' comments that "appeared racist", but he said that South Africans remained "too over-sensitive to each other".

Asked about comments made by Malema, specifically, Mantashe replied: "Comments that are a departure from ANC policy do not do good for the ANC."

Shivambu dismissed reports about Mantashe's statement as "media sensations".

"The decline of the coloured and Indian votes for the ANC cannot in any way be linked to the utterances of the ANCYL leadership.

"The view that white people do not vote for the ANC because of the utterances of the leadership of the ANCYL is the view expressed by the Madam [Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille] in an attempt to divert our attention from real economic and social transformation issues," said Shivambu.

He said the ANCYL supported efforts by the ANC to investigate why it was losing support amongst the coloured and Indian communities.

"...[A]nd this should extend to efforts that seek to properly understand why an absolute majority of white people in South Africa have never supported the ANC."

Yeah - for a while I thought it would be best to ignore the rantings of the ANCYL and its airheaded leaders, but this is classic!

Floyd, Julie: more, boys, more! We all need a laugh, and watching you guys is like watching Tweedledum and Tweedledoofus.

ANC logic is back to front. Simply reverse everything they say and you've hit the nail on the head.

In this case, they used Malema to rake in votes and they are very pleased with the results. But they'll say they're not pleased to try and confuse anyone who thought they were.

Makes a lot more sense now doesn't it? :)

Edit: You know that old saying, if you can't convince them with your lies, confuse them with your bullsh$t. Malema and the ANC are in the exact same bed together, everything they do they do in tandem.

So it's not poor service delivery, or corruption officials wasting millions of tax-money on their extravagant indulgences, that cost the ANC votes? Hahaha. Juju's contribution to the loss is not as serious as the very real, clearly-evident lack of discipline and conscience in the party itself

They slap him on the wrists in public, but pat him on the back behind closed doors and he's all too happy to be the convenient pawn! :P

He'll probably be voted president before then, laws will change, this democracy will be even less of a democracy than it is now.
 
its not juju that lost them my vote its the way they handled (read un-handled) the situation
Yes I know they tried to gag him but it was mostly ineffective if there was any real effort put in to gag him in the first place
 
I seriously doubt that he lost them many votes. It's quite funny when you think about it, I mean for goodness sake the ANC are so ridiculously bad at handling tax payers money, do they honestly not stop to think for one moment that their pathetic service delivery, bad planning and corruption has anything to do with it?

It's not Zuma or Malema you fools, it's the way your running the country which is costing you votes!

They paraded him on most of their rallies, so how did they try to gag him? Seems to me that they did exactly the opposite.
 
Juju and his uncle-in-the-corruption-business prove that you can be untouchable, despite any illegal and underhanded activities you do, or objectionable and downright harmful things you say in public.
