The SA Revenue Service (Sars) has obtained a R16-million judgment against former ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema for unpaid taxes, according to a report on Sunday.

The judgment was obtained in the High Court in Pretoria on September 11, City Press reported.

Malema did not oppose the application by Sars.

Sars spokesman Adrian Lackay confirmed the judgment against Malema for R16-million was obtained.

He told the newspaper the amount included unpaid taxes, penalties and interest.

Lackay said he could not give any more details of Malema's tax affairs because a "taxpayer's confidentiality is a legal obligation imposed on Sars".

According to the report Sars was about to seize Malema's property and assets in Gauteng and Limpopo.

Alan Lewis, a tax law consultant and advocate, told City Press the judgment showed two things: Malema had a "hell of a lot of money" and he was in deep trouble.

now lets see him get out of this one. if anyone for one second thinks that there will be leniency here they best think again, especially his little sheep. this is not the disciplinary hearings he had. this is SARS and they want their money. there is no negotiating whatsoever, if you owe the money pay up or have your assets attached. no ifs, and, or buts.

Somehow I feel 16mil is a drop in the ocean for Juju. Sars wanting their money from him is the tip of the iceberg.... interesting times ahead.

Malema is a weasel.

He'll weasel himself out of this one again.

How? He is a nobody with no connection high up in the government. Sars are amazingly good at their jobs. He is going down unless someone him gives the money he needs but i cannot think of anyone who will.

If he owes R16 Million in taxes then he should have much more. He'll use that to pay off or bribe someone to get away.

They will settle for an undisclosed amount, that's my guess.
SARS would rather have R4 million hassle free than fight for R16 million.

The strategy being followed here is sound: prove very publicly beyond doubt for the edification of Malema's support base (the poor and ignorant) that Malema is not poor at all, Malema has been lying to his supporters and is just as corrupt as the rest of the cANCer's fat cats, this should cause support for Malema to crumble.

The supporters stupidity factor could also cause a backfire but it makes sense to try this strategy as it will also erode Malema's finances every time Malema has to make use of lawyers and appear in courts. The other side to this story is that Malema is backed by Tokyo who has enough money to throw at Malema's legal problems.

Like Al Capone, they eventually nailed him for tax evasion as nothing else could stick.

Unfortunately they will still vote for him no matter what, ignore all his thieving and scheming and plain ignorance just because he is against the whites and want to take from them.. *sigh*

Don't understand why they still vote for the ANC as all the provinces they are in command has gone to ashes while the DA in Western Cape performs rather well in comparison, and now the ANCYL wants to destroy this too! Asked our domestic worker the other day just out of curiosity for which party she votes, answer obviously ANC but then when I asked her why she really could(or rather say wouldn't) give me an answer.. which is such a shame as they still think of apartheid ens and don't really see anything else! :(

He will probably get sick, be admitted to hospital and let off with a warning.

i love the stupid answers coming from this thread. SARS will NOT let anyone off their tax debt. pay up or have your assets seized.

SARS would rather prefer that you stay out of jail, then you can keep contributing to the ANC ministers wallets.

In jail you're not worth much to SARS.

So you're saying SARS lets anyone who can't pay off the hook? That's exactly what they don't do.
