Malema owes Sars R16-million

Who knew, the man who claims to fight for the poor was stealing money from the poor through tenders.

I don't get it though, politicians get paid so much money, yet they still want to steal some cash from the system.

Everyone is painting SARS as ruthless sharks and I'm not debating the accuracy of that picture. What I'm wondering is; how do you build up a R16m debt in the face of this? Is this his tax for one year or has SARS just looked the other way until now? Not so ruthless then...

and you know this first hand?

SARS have become absolute bastids when it comes to outstanding money and documents. you don't submit documents you don't get the allowed deduction. you don't pay up, you have you assets attached. that's just how it is now with SARS. you have to remember they have to collect a certain amount each year and this most certainly will boost the collection. trust me this won't slide there are bonus' to be had here.

we will never know blu. he is entitled to not have his affairs made public just like you and i or anyone else for that matter. this is his tax. it will never be made public. there is more to this than meets the eye here. SARS have access to his bank account they could have just as well deducted the money from his bank account. this is more than money owing to SARS.

Search for 'Brett Kebble tax fraud' on Google and you'll see all the links.

However one cannot say that SARS would've never investigated him though as he was shot before they laid charges against him, IIRC.

this whole saga is not just about him owing money to SARS. the outstanding money could have been taken from his bank account just like anyone else who doesn't pay up. SARS has access to everyone's bank details and if you don't pay your debt they will just deduct it from your bank if you have the funds available.

I don't think it's one year's tax, the investigation was spoken about a couple of years ago. It's just that now he got on the wrong side of Zuma.

SARS probably tried to debit his bank account, without success, hence the court judgment and them now having to attach his assets.

Are you implying that if you are one of Jaycob's cronies, SARS will not pursue you if you neglected to pay your taxes?

Didn't Zuma get off with a slap on the wrist for not declaring/paying tax on Shaik's loans/gifts?

... from back in 2008 before the NPA made all eleventy-twelve charges against Zuma just go away
Taxing matters
The NPA also said that Zuma’s recent settlement with the South African Revenue Service (Sars) did not necessarily clear him “after years of delinquency”.

In the affidavit, Du Plooy wrote: “I observe that the ‘regularisation’ of his tax affairs after years of delinquency does not exculpate him any more than a thief who repays the stolen money, or a shoplifter who attempts to replace the stolen goods on the shelf after he is caught.”

He pointed out that Zuma had settled with Sars “after his indictment on the present charges”.

Zuma claimed his settlement with Sars was “reached without any admission of criminal conduct on my part and on the basis that it disposes of and resolves all liability in respect of the said tax issues—both criminal and civil liability”.

He said that the NPA should have been aware of his discussions with Sars representatives since it had been “prying” into his financial affairs “and indeed resorted to spying on me using intelligence-gathering methods not authorised by any competent body”.

Du Plooy rejected the spying allegations, saying that “we were unaware of any impending settlement of his outstanding taxes. This appears to have been a recent development.”

He said that the NPA had not received a copy of an agreement or proof of payment.—Sapa
