According to the Mail&Guardian Online, a top law firm has suddenly withdrawn as ANC Youth League president Julius Malema’s representation in his “shoot the boer” case.
A top lawyer at the firm has apparently resigned over it, and Malema himself rushed to accuse Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs (ENS) of racism.
ENS is Africa’s largest law firm, and ENS chief executive Peter Faber has denied that the withdrawal had anything to do with racism. He also denied that the withdrawal had caused rifts within the firm.
Malema was taken to court by Afriforum, a civil society group, for singing of the above mentioned song, which was, according to the group, fuelling the country’s culture of violence against white farmers.
Malema said it was his right to sing struggle songs, and he was supported by both the ANC and Cosatu in his application.
Apparently the company’s withdrawal was related to politics, but an insider has said that one group of lawyers was concerned that Malema’s singing of the song could endanger their own families who owned farms.
However, another group, which included attorney Peter Tshisevhe – who was the man who resigned – said the decision could not be made on a personal basis.
Malema apparently said of the firm’s withdrawal that it was both racist and unprofessional, and the taking of sides was evidence that the firm still operated as though “we [were] under the apartheid regime.
He went on to say that they acted in a racist manner and asked, “If they can treat the president of the ANC Youth League like this, how about ordinary people?”
