A man has been arrested after he confessed to a murder in a text message to the police, it was reported on Thursday.
A man had sent an SMS notifying police of his intention to kill himself and admitting to the murder of Lindiwe Ngwenya, reported the Sowetan.
"Officers rushed to the man's house soon after receiving the text message. While [they were there] the man sent a message to his current girlfriend telling her he was about to take his life," police spokesman Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini told the paper.
Police found the man in a toilet at the Dobsonville police station about to drink poison.
Part of the SMS, sent in Zulu, translates into English as: "I hit her and she died by mistake on August 12, 2012, but her family will never find her body as my payback after 23 years of abuse, crying and pleading for help".
According to the paper, the woman was last seen in August last year by a neighbour. She and the suspect were apparently quarreling a day before she disappeared.
Her family reported her missing when they went two months without seeing her.
The family was awaiting DNA results on the body of an unknown woman, found in Dobsonville last year.
Dlamini said the man was expected to face murder charges.
