Man Caught Driving at 224 Km/h

A 28-year-old man angered by his girlfriend was caught driving at 224km/h on the N1 near the Grasmere toll plaza on Friday, Johannesburg metro police said.

"He told officers that he was angry at his girlfriend and put the foot down on the accelerator. The girlfriend was next to him in the black BMW M3," said spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

He said the man from Lenasia was arrested at 2am and was expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Minnaar said six more drivers were arrested on the N1 for driving at more than 160km/h on a 120km/h zone.

They were also expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Wow.. seems this past week the speed freaks have been trying to set new records with excuses.. i guess the lady pulling a 216km/h record was just not gonna sit well with him.

So i'm here in Cape Town for a bit of a vacation and *gasp* every car has a number plate! WTF! It's like i'm so use to driving behind or getting flashed by cars without them that seeing a number plate is unbelievable. This is kinda freaky.. what % of cars dont have number plates in Gauteng? I mean it must be a huge % for me to noticed the difference on the 1st day i arrived back. 2ndly .. WHY do the cops never pull those buggers off the road? I'm pretty sure 99% of them drive fast

Am I the only one here that thinks that speed limits should be lane dependant on big highways like the N1? I mean far left is the slowest and far right is the fastest. Make the most right lane 160 or something. It may as well be seeing how every time I do drive the N1 through joburg, some big business man in his M3 or AMG comes flying past me in the far right lane at 160 - 180

Does it not have something to do with visible policing and enforcement of the law in CT? Mostly the local metros are to busy looking for the next donut or talking bribes. Okay so not all, but it feels like it sometimes. CT also known to be less tolerant of law breakers.

Every taxi is going to hog that lane.

What happened to trucks and taxis only allowed to go 100? Nothing because making a law and enforcing if is two different things.

Well i've been in Cape Town now since Tuesday evening and been out & about with mom and sister. Thus far i've seen one speed enforcement manned camera but 7-9 traffic cops on the road cruising around. So perhaps you are right about more visibility.. they out and about here while in jhb they just sitting under a bridge, between a hedge ignoring the taxi going in the wrong direction. Taxis in Cpt get the bad end of the stick here, get pulled over a lot, fined for stopping in wrong places etc

With respect to number plates the reason Jhb has a high incidence of vehicles without is corruption. The fine for lack of number plate is somewhere in the region of R1.5k-3k (cant remember) which is insanely high.. but in Jhb there is option of spot settlements Now consider this.. if you speed within 25% of limit, i.e. 120km/hr => 150km/hr.. your fine is lesser and they unlikely to send the choppers etc. Chance of talking your way out of it is high with a spot fine/bribe on the cards if you do get caught. So instead of 1.5k + R750? in fines they bribr with R200-500 and Jhb metro being their greedy selves the okes get away. Assuming the guy gets pulled over once for five transgressions you can easily see how it's worth it to no bother with a number plate. eTolls I suspect is going to make this worse as people will feel justified for not having a number plate(*insert opposition for tolls* include freebie speeding)

Basically what i'm saying is this.. and this extends to the entire legal and enforcement in SA! Unless we have effective Enforcement & Prosecution, setting high fines etc will amount to bugger all. The Cape Town thing working is because there are people watching over the metro cops.<-- there was a big scandal a few years back about corruption here too. In Jhb the watchers of enforcers are on the take too.

haha i've had to learn to lock my doors when i moved to Jhb! In cpt i'm use to leaving car unlocked at home etc which gets it stolen in jhb. The seat belt thing.. hrm.. everyone in family wears a seatbelt, there was a massive drive to enforce this a few years ago particularly in Stellenbosch, so i always wear it. The thing is in Cpt everywhere you go is 1-5km away assuming you stay central to your work/lifestyle environment thus you could never get on a highway/speed more that 70km/hr which has been proven that seat belts cause more injuries than worth at low speeds. So you easily forget to put them on as its a <5min commute.

In Jhb everything is 15-30km away and you use 5 lane highways, travelling at a high avg speed if you don't drive in peak hour, have to watch out for for a plethora of vehicles who think they own the road and entitled to do as they please hence there are more accidents i reckon.

Ps. Cape Town is noticeably more congested than ever over the last year. Apparently a LOT of Jhb people(ex cpt people too) are moving down here such that traffic has increased drastically. Parents telling me to buy places this side as soon as i can as a result. :erm: wtf is happening as jobs are getting scarce here as a result too i'm told. Everyone is apparently fighting for jobs and the old cappies are moving north because they cant compete with influx of jhbers

I must have saved 1000's in stupid speed fines for driving without my front number plate. I keep mine in the boot and I know the drill Be apologetic and just tell the idiot, the number plate fell off a short while ago. It works every time.

Someone forgot to tell him that he doesn't need to show off. He has a car capable of 250km/h+ and everyone knows that. What he should do is purposefully drive slowly to piss people off.... just because he can.

That's what I'll do with my first Ferrari, but I'll do something different. I'll give it a Hello Kitty or some other BS paint job and watch the faces of horrified people - and I'll just do it, because I can.

I wasn't aware of these proven studies. At work no one is allowed to drive without seatbelts and speeds are less than 60kph. So this means we could be putting people in danger than actually reducing the risks. Are there links to these studies proving seat belts cause more injuries than worth at speeds < 70kph?
