This is good news indeed,
the police should do more of this especially on the N3 JHB-DBN...
these morons must not be allowed to just get away with a fine!

A man was arrested in Sandton for failing to display both his front and rear vehicle licence plates, Johannesburg metro police said on Friday.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the driver of a black Audi SR4 was arrested on Thursday afternoon at the corner of Marlboro drive and Southway road.

Metro police stopped the car and discovered that both the licence plates were in the car's boot.

................

There was no fine for such an offence and the driver would have to appear in court for the offence.

And there is a reason he didn't have a number plate OFC :D

Good on them, lock the bastard up.

I have a solution for these people.

When they file the fines it should also be filed under make and colour.
So when they arrest a guy for not displaying a number plate, pull all the fines matched to make and colour of said person in the region he is caught and add all to his name. Wether it's his or not. He is liable for it.

Now that will force them to use plates going forward :D Imagine you drive a Golf 1 white and get arrested :D You will have to then declare yourself bankrupt :D

I looked up the Road Traffic Act

Section 35 says "Failed to affix both number plates of a vehicle" - 6 demerit points. Court appreance.

but it also says "Fail to affix one number plate" - 1 demerit and R250 fine.

Idiot, just take off the back one since all speed traps are from behind these days.

Not in Jo'Burg. They hit from the front 90% of the time. This way they have the driver's face also.

there is alot more problems on the roads than moaning about some one who does not have plates on his car, sounds like you lot are bit jealous.

I think the biggest deterrent for speeding would be a time-out. If you are caught speeding, they stop you and make you wait x number of hours before letting you go again. Situation depending ofcourse.

Jealous of what? That he took off his plates to avoid speed fines?

He got caught. He has to face the consequences.

You can either get caught speeding, or for taking off your plates.

He knew he was going to be speeding, so like a person planning to commit a premeditated crime, he took off the plates.

Is premeditated murder worse than other types of murder? Well, the effect is the same, but you consciously intended to do the one, and put quite a bit of thought into it.

Perhaps the insurance companies should also give extended penalties if your car had the license plate(s) 'in the boot'?

The car was so expensive that he didnt have change left to buy double sided tape for the plates

I'm dropping off my sister-in-law in the mornings while her regular lift is on leave, and I was almost nailed on Main Reef when the taxis were striking.

Road was open - 3+ lanes with good visibility ... Turn onto Main Reef, and then there's a good nice stretch to the next Commando/Main Reef robot. If you're about 20 over the limit, you could possibly make the robot before it turns yellow, so if I didn't want to get a podcast loaded onto the radio, I would've been on the wrong side of the 80km/h limit when I saw the smiling cameraman.

That would've been a frontal shot as well.

a question: think of the times you got a speeding ticket, were you going out of way to gun it? . . . My tickets were always 131 or 133 in a 120 zone. If ever i was in a rush i am more vigilant of cameras and never got a ticket then. Just something i noticed

A couple of years ago I were driving with the work's little old f'ed-up Nissan half-tonner bakkie and got stopped at a roadblock. I assumed it was about my front number plate that had fallen off that morning and I told them so. They didn't react to my explanation and just told to park over there. They then had me wait for about 30 minutes before someone came to me. At that stage I were already quite bedonderd.

The first thing the traffic cop asked was for my license. I said (politely) if this was about the missing number plate that this was an not my fault for it had fallen off or got stolen that morning. I then also asked if they intend to write me a ticket. The traffic cop just repeated that I must hand over my license. I said, 'no', not until you at least tell me why you pulled me over.

He then almost angrily said that I must hand over my license immediately. I then did so. He inspected it and also walk around the little bakkie. He then said because of my uncooperative attitude he wasn't going to write me ticket for the missing number plate which was R350, he was rather going to write me a ticket for the back tow-bar that was obstructing the rear numberplate and that carried a R500 fine.

I kept my mouth shut. He proceeded to write that.

Back at worked I heard that the bakkie went through the road-worthy tests back in the day with that tow-bar and we still had the documents to prove it. I wrote a letter to the public prosecutor stating these facts. Needless to say the ticket got scrapped.

Giving the traffic cop some lip does work sometimes.

if the number plates were in the boot then a fine I think doesn't cut it, his intention was to break the law by speeding, he should be put in jail so he can learn his lesson

I saw another idiot on the R21 today without a rear number, didn't get to see if he had front plates or not, as he was lane-surfing. It was the one day that I wish the cops were on the highway. It was a maroon Daewoo Cielo, think one of the first models in SA, and the condition of the car was not good, so I guess a missing numberplate is not a surprise.

I think the fines for missing numberplates are way too lenient at the moment.
