A man was killed by a chainsaw while working on a plantation off the R71 outside Tzaneen on Wednesday, paramedics have confirmed.

Are they going to charge the chainsaw with Murder? After all it was only doing its cutting job

kickback can be dangerous on those things, especially if he wasnt doing it right,

Yeah I'm thinking the root of the problem is the chain at lower speeds caught on something on/in the bark maybe a piece of metal/nails and it basically kicked back into him.

You need to have your entire body firmly planted to counter such a situation from sprouting out of control.

I've worked with chainsaws before and you need to put in effort for this to happen.

Assuming he's right handed, with his right hand on the throttle and left hand gripping both the brake and the handle.

If it kicks back one of two things would happen:
1) his right hand would come off the throttle stopping the chain as there's no throttle being applied
2) his left hand will let go of the handle and the brake, and the chain will stop turning even if he pushes the throttle.

For those who don't know, the brake of a chainsaw works like a dead man's switch. You have to grip it, together with the handle, else the chain won't move if you apply the throttle. So you need both your hands to operate the saw, it won't work with only one hand.
