A horrific 40-minute ordeal in the late hours of Monday night left a Port Elizabeth man dead after he was mauled by two pitbulls.

Another man who tried to intervene was also savaged and taken to Livingstone Hospital after residents desperately tried – and failed – to pry the animals off using a stun gun‚ sticks‚ boiling water and by ramming the dogs with their vehicles.

Ruan Redgard‚ 27‚ whose clothing was ripped off his body‚ died shortly after being dragged into a nearby garden by residents when the dogs were eventually chased away by an ADT vehicle.

The attack on Redgard was unprovoked as he was walking back to his Magnolia Street‚ Algoa Park home at about 10pm‚ according to eyewitnesses.

His sister‚ Chantelle‚ said she was woken up on Monday night by someone who lived with her brother.

“They said I must come quick because my brother was dead‚” she said.

“I was told the dogs came over a wall and started attacking my brother.

Sarcasm? They were trying to get the dogs off him. Nothing works when a pitbull is in attack mode. They should be put down and the owner charged with murder.

A pitbull headline is no longer surprising and the breed should be banned or extreme licensing requirements imposed on owning them. I'm still waiting for a man mauled to death by labradors headline to pop up.

Editing because I see the police already shot and killed the dogs.

more importantly, where are all the dogs and dog owners protesting against this? they should all go back to where they came from

Money on the table it's another douchebag owner with ****all knowledge of how to raise the dogs. They need to start licencing this and enforcing it strictly.
 
ugh!!! here we go again... every few weeks a new pitbull story to remind people about the breed.

Call for Pit Bull's removal after two children attacked

Cape Town - Two little sisters say they are lucky to be alive after they were attacked by a pit bull which had jumped over its owner’s wall.

The girls, aged 11 and 12, were playing with their 14-year-old brother on a small field along Welkom Street in Portlands on Monday when the pit bull jumped over its owner’s wall in nearby Durban Way.

They say the dog spotted them and attacked.

It never is. Pitbulls are the most peaceful, non-aggressive, dogs. I think in fact their teeth are made of candy floss. I think they kill by overdose of sweetness or some such ****.

When are they just gonna outlaw ownership of these cream puffs, as simply no owner on the planet is qualified to handle their supreme gentleness.

This is not true.

Dogs can have a very determined attack response. But all dogs share a physical/skeletal issue: their front legs cannot be widely separated without disabling the dog.

So if attacked, break that dogs shoulders by pushing the front legs far apart. (Beyond 90 degrees will hurt, 180 will permanently disable)

Or maybe, before it gets to that stage, an onlooker grabs the dog by the back legs and spins it (so it is unable to bite back) until the dog can be removed and supressed. Granted, some guy is going to be swinging an angry pit bull around by it back legs, but they can't attack you from that position, and you are in a good position to throw them over a wall/dash their brains out/offer sweet words & cuddles as you see fit

Belt or leash and choke them out.

Doesn't work for Staffies in my experience. And my labs, sweet as they were, had a lot of loose neck skin and fur that would render that tactic useless.

I suspect Pitbull and Pitbull mixes (and other breeds misidentified as Pitbulls) would behave ....well. Like dogs. And keep fighting.
