He was right and wrong at the same time, the murder charges should be dropped and only the unlicensed firearm charge should stay IMO. Kinda the same thing with the Somalian who was trying to protect himself and shot that robber kid

So then in this case, it was a licensed gun stolen or 'borrowed' from the Metro Police? An unlicensed gun then as I understand it refers to a gun which has never been on the firearm registry?

In this case its hard to say due to cr@py wording/reporting.

In a perfect world

Charges against the store owner would include but are not limited to alleged murder, attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition (this charge can be broken down further and expanded depending on several influences)

Charges against the Johannesburg metro police department would include but not limited to gross misconduct (not reporting a missing firearm or ammunition), gross negligence (the fact they are missing a firearm and ammunition) and potentially accessory to murder (it was a metro gun used in a crime).

With regard to the unregistered firearm.

They know the firearm belongs to metro but also say its unlicensed, the owner of a firearm is responsible for licencing i.e. the metro.
Each metro police department has a separate registry of their own firearms, these firearms should also be licensed in the central firearms licence registry ( but often they are not).

someone with a licensed firearm can have it stolen, but yeah does that then make the person who stole it in possession of an unlicensed firearm? or it a stolen licensed firearm.

It is all semantics really. But if you want the real definition, then a gun that is unlicensed is not on the CFR system at all. It is not licensed to anyone. You don't say someone has an unlicensed gun if it is licensed to someone else.
