i am not sure if this the right place to post this question, so feel free to move it if necessary. we have been collecting the 2008 Nelson Mandela R5 coin for a few weeks now hoping it may be worth something but today my wife came across a 2000 Nelson Mandela R5 coin and i see some people are selling them on the auction sites. do any of you on the forum know anything about these 2 coins?

Maybe a bit more if you happen to sell it to someone on a auction site or something.

There was a whole thing about this in the paper the other day...
 
oh ok i would have liked to read that article, i will google it to see if i can find something. on ebay and bid or buy they do have a few coins but i dont know how those sites work to gather more info on the coins we have.
 
I have not seen one of these Mandela R5's!!!
Its people like you who are stopping me from getting to view one! :D
 
I had a proof 1994 Presidential Inauguration R5 that I bought a few years ago for R120 and placed on bidorbuy a few months ago : got R1850 or something :P

I checked what some other R5s fetched and most are between R1800-R3000.

Proof though :/

Oh awesome, i got me one of those courtesy of my grandfather. Actually it's a whole set of proof coins, and the R5 inaugural one.

Thanks Dolby, my new computer is now within sight!
 
Proof ... in the plastic container and untouched/uncirculated ;)

These real collecters send them overseas to be graded according to quality. It can be a low grade (which still attracts R1000+ prices) or high grade (which attracts many R10,000+ pricing). It's pretty much a lucky draw.

The graders overseas break open that little CD plastic case, check quality with microscopes etc and grade it.

Collectors hope to buy from you at R,2,000.00 and get it graded so it's worth R20,000 ;)

It's all in my post : collectors buy them to make money as they're collectors items? However only proof coins which can be sent off to be graded.

And btw? I've sold mine for that price - as have many, many people ... hardly nonsense ;)
 
Back in 1994 you could purchase them from the Reserve Bank directly. Obviously these are all sold now and the only ways are through coin collectors, auction sites etc etc

I bought mine from a coin collectors about 4 or so years ago.
 
I am sure one day they will be worth something, would love to see one haven't come across them yet!!!!
