Manual transmissions

The new automatic gearboxes with more gears, a torque converter and torque converter lock is unbeatable. Even better than dual-clutch.

1. More gears have the benefits of CVT without the bad.
2. Locking the torque converter removes the bad of torque converters
3. And torque converters is also torque multipliers! Something you don't get in dual-clutch.

Tell me something, Mr Expert, have you actually driven a car with, say, a ZF-8 speed box?
If you like your automatic, you can keep it. Nothing I said is against automatic cars. It's just not for me, I find it boring and my left foot feels lost. The only criticism "condescending" stuff I said was against people that use manual cars incorrectly and then want to blame the mechanics when it is infact the opperator.

Yep that's what I was thinking of getting a disco 3 or 4 in diesel, are they reliable where could I find out properly?

The Diesels are rock solid.

There are loads of threads on them in the 4x4 forums. Also dedicated UK forums with regards to Land Rovers. I checked out the landyzone.co.uk before I made my choice on which Freelander to buy

Want to know what it would cost to fix a manual transmission?

I recently priced it for my relatively simple five speed box..... just shy of R15k for Recon stuff... don't even WANT to know what a new box would have cost....

Yeah and im sure can get cheaper as well

but the new gearboxes are prices of cars

So, you don't know what you talking about then.

You haven't driven the auto's in question, but are arguing with people who have driven both manuals and auto's, and thus know what they are talking about.

You go, boy.

It took some getting used to at first, but with the arm rest for my left hand, ample space for my left foot to do what it wants in boredom. I'm loving it.

Because... it gives me complete control of the car...

It's an auto box, not a horse.
When you want it to change down you floor the throttle, when you want it to change up you ease up on the throttle and when you ambling along the auto box will find the best gear for you. Most autobox's have the semi auto function that allows you to hold a gear if you want.
What else do you need to control ?

What auto's in qeustion? When I said some idiot doesn't know how to use a clutch, which specific auto were I talking about?
You have a problem with your reading comprehension.

About R15k was the cheapest I could find for Recon stuff....

And yes, new gearboxes are the price of cars... but I think that applies to new manual boxes and auto boxes... they're all ridiculously full of electronics now.

How so? I'm not at all familiar with how a torque converter actually works- can you explain in more detail?

Not sure of the technicalities, but while it's slipping, the torque on its output side is much higher than the torque on the input side, kinda like having an extra reduction gear in there.

You have a problem recalling what you said. You were arguing with folks by introducing fantasy traffic conditions.

Tell us, what auto's have you driven?

Ok thanks will go check it out, from a quick look it looks like there is a huge difference between the 3 and 4,seems like the 4 is the one to go for, much better interior, engines, features etc

Im curious to see what the manual only crowd drives thats so exciting, and what the auto crowd drives. To some a car is a tool only, to some an appliance, in those cases auto should always win. Modern autos are as effecient and some more so than manuals. The drivetrain loss on DSG is not worse than manual...

I also dont get the "only girls drive auto".... A Mclaren P1 isnt very girly.
