Manual vs Automatic

All I know is that I am pretty good at it seeing I have been at it since 1967.

So that would make you around 70 then? A question - have you ever driven a manual in (and from) the 21'st century?

Would a,test drive in a blik met wiele M class in July 2019 qualify?
Enough said don't be a wise are.

Seeing as I'm struggling to understand what you are saying, let alone what you ostensibly drove, I honestly have to say this doesn't qualify.

edit just for you:

Would a test drive in a Blik Met Wiele M class (M3 Competition 2017 "previously owned") in July 2019 qualify?

Was this the same BMW "M-class" that you raced against up a slight slope and beat in 5th gear in a double cab? Because the driver wasn't trained to drive an automatic?

I test drove an auto that can kick down from 7th to 2nd in less than 300 milliseconds. A 70 year old can't think that fast.

Sorry. Can't take you seriously.

So what is that? A simulated computer controlled gearbox braking. And again not available in the low cost so called automatic transmission systems.

Well done on shifting the goal posts.

You said and I quote "And gearbox assisted braking is essential for 4 x 4 driving on really bad terrain"

Now all of a sudden low cost is being thrown into the equation.

But alas even your goalpost shifting won't work as it's available in cheap models like the Renault duster,no to mention normal 4x4 bakkies like the ranger etc....

Did it scare you so much that you blocked out the automatic experience?

Also with the childish brand acronyms. Yet another brand boi ware SA petrol head.

Drove both a manual and an automatic. Preferred the manual by far .......
Went with a friend who was in the market for one. In the end he went with the manual version.

1. A manual gearbox, in all vehicles, gives you all these things for free --- All YOU have to do is learn to drive a vehicle properly.
2. An automatic, ---- and especially the lower-priced small ones do not provide many of these facilities. Some even do not have a manual override option. So, the only way out for the manufacturers is to add more and more "automation" at the expense of performance.
3. The Term "SUV" is not well understood by many. So, they get this small SUV, and go into places where no amount of automation is going to keep them out of trouble.
4. A manual 4 x 4 (or even 2 x 4 ) means the DRIVER is in charge AND he can CHOOSE when and where to make use of gearbox assisted braking by simply choosing the correct gear.
5. In an automatic (the low-end ones) the DRIVER has to wait until some or other computer chip decides to kick in assisted braking and then unless he knows what the vehicle was designed for it can be no more than the use of ABS assisted braking. Look up what brake assist means for all the variants.

Next time I come across a driver in one of these vehicles stuck in a situation he should never have got himself into I will think twice about offering him assistance after all this BS in this thread.

I'm sure you did. We have seen how "flexible" you are in your opinions.

So you're not gonna help somebody who got stuck because some random people on an internet thread don't think a manual gearbox is the be all and end all...ok then as you were then, you seem to be a bit faulty.

:D

There is one report somewhere on MyBB comparing the BMW M3 performance-wise that stated that 0 - 100 kph in 4 seconds for the automatic and 4.2 seconds for the manual. I can easily do without the 0.2 seconds. ----

Funny how many on the 4x4community forum think automatics are great for proper 4x4ing and rock-crawling, maybe I understood them wrong or they are generally not really subject matter experts there.

Heh he! Of course not, a fellow traveller in the bundus deserves help regardless of what he drives, from a BMX to a BMW! (tongue in cheek comment) Just a bit of bait to see what the reaction would be.

Those are all upmarket 4 x 4 's not the smaller ones. Quote a few examples so we can see what vehicles they are talking about.

Not sure this guy would be much help anyway. Am curious to hear which dealership had both manual and auto m3/m4 available for test driving. The usual "I was just joking guyz" "that not what I said" retraction. Just like his ultimate bakkie street racing stories.

I can easily do without all the manual work required for a manual.

Face it, best auto's are better than the best manuals (and their drivers).
