Manual vs Automatic

Saw that article today as well.
Wonder why the comments about the auto article stop dead after the first two. Then the article does not even define what type of auto box is installed.

If you are going to have the title the article does then stick to the point and tell us about the Automatic transmission installed in each.

The bottom two are just automated manuals. The rest may use better boxes.
Does go some way to say that the absolute lowest torque needed for an "automatic" is 95 - 100 nm.

There are only two on the list that I would even bother to investigate further, The Hyundai and the Suzuki Swift.

I think electric might kill the need for a transmission.

However, for real world everyday use a traditional automatic makes sense. For me, I'll stick to manual because I drive for pleasure.

We just got back from a trip to Sheffield Beach, used my '14 VW Touareg 3.0 V6 TDi which has an 8 speed ZF automatic gearbox with torque converter, I can confirm that downshifting is not an issue and neither is keeping speed up on an uphill.
Let's state some facts
R 1.1 million worth of car.
190 kW power 600 nm torque.
8 speed ZF automatic with torque converter.
A driver that knows what he is doing.
I should hope it would have no difficulties otherwise I would be super p!ssed off. :D

I would say that a car that does not have a third pedal (clutch pedal) is an automatic.
So don't worry about the nomenclature or bother with the different types of transmissions.

Note well that I've not used the word gearbox; simply because a cvt transmission doesn't have any gears.

Me. I love changing gears and brag about the fact that many times I change gears without using the clutch.
If I were to have to drive in heavy traffic on a regular basis, I would definitely opt for an automatic transmission.

Nah, your facts are a bit off.

Its only R350k - R400k worth of vehicle.

Its 180kw and 550nm of torque.

You are assuming the driver knows what he is doing though, so that isn't a fact. Sorry @Neuk_

You must be fun at social gatherings...

Well he would be good for a laugh, especially when he completes screws the gearbox and the manufacturer tells him to get bent when he lodges a warranty claim.

Yep. I’ve got the exact same car and model and tbh I’m fscking clueless when it comes to such things. I’m strictly an A to B driver and I actually drive my sons Polo more often than the Touareg :p

(i'm making an assumption with the following jibe :p )

Typical damn Scotsman... would rather use someone else vehicle instead of their own... cheap b@stard :D

Not according to the cars.co za article I looked at but okay if you say so.
And okay about the driver, was giving @Neuk the benefit of the doubt :D

My puny Golf 7 1.4L TSI DSG does fine over Helshoogte pass every day. Certainly less effort than my Civic 1.8L manual that required constant shifting to get any torque out of the motor at 4000 rpm.

Anyways I have chronic knee pain so it's either an auto or no car.

As I originally posted, there are cases where an automatic becomes an imperative choice.
Which Helshoogte are you taking about?
