I didn't bother with server slam.

Will download and give it a proper go this weekend

I see large dropoff on player count:

For Bungie's sake, hope the full release dont suffer the same fate.
Cause pretty sure Sony will have no problem closing them as well. Just ask Bluepoint Games hows it hanging.

I tried the server slam. Took me one game to realise its not for me and my friends had similar experiences. With Arc Raiders and Helldivers 2 out there, this is probably going to end up on PS Plus soon just to get a player base going.

List is missing Fairgame$ (Sony seems to be slowly aborting it). King of meat (Its dead Jim) & Supervive (Its dead Jim)
Just live service slop.

As a D2, D4 & NMS player I can totally agree.

I have a crap ton of games that I never get to cause of those 3.
I know, I know My_King and his Pokemon takes...butt

I kinda wish Pokemon could go the same route as per above.

Maybe then we can get a better game.

Last game had us running inside a circle doing lame stuff.
DLC? Invert the colour and have us do the same.

Weird, there is absolutely nothing that even calls to me to try this game.

And that's from a huge Halo and early access Destiny fan.

On that subject.... High guard is shutting down:

Yep. little over 40 days since launch and its dead.

People have a finite amount of time, there is a vast library of titles to enjoy, not just what is released this year but years past that is available to play instead.

There is an enormous oversupply of gaming titles. Especially with the nature of live service titles that demand so much of your time, players have to sacrifice too much to play them instead of much more refined and focused gaming experiences. Titles that respect your time, have a beginning, middle and end.

The sooner this live service trend dies off the better.

Honestly think the gun play will be great but hell those colors, animations and overall look and feel is just not doing it for me. I know that is the "style" but to me personally it is like Apex and Fortnite had a baby whilst they were both doing Meth..

Unlike the other studios who almost immediately got closed down, I suspect Sony will give Bungie a little time with Marathon to see if it grabs a big enough audience.

It is one of those legacy studios, I just don't see them being closed within a month of launch... unless it is Concord level player base that does not even reach 500.

I'd say both Marathon and Horizon have decent chances of succeeding. Marathon might not need a huge player base, since the extraction shooter genre is kind of niche. Escape from Tarkov doesn't do huge numbers either. Though Arc Raiders is a beast.

Live service attempts will also never go away, just look at the most played games on every platform and you know why, plus they struck gold with HD2 and getting another game like that is probably worth risking a few hundred mill.

Bungie HAS to do gang buster numbers with Marathon, they are on thin ice with Sony who spent billions acquiring them.
It won't be enough to just be ok. Sony expects big returns on that massive investment.

Marathon has the same weakness of every online live service game.
Once the perception is that the game is dying, it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

A negative feedback loop of people leaving because of lower player numbers, which people take notice of, which makes people leave, which people take notice of... etc etc etc.

Helldivers 2 is an exception for a reason, HD2 succeeded in part because of the community that formed around the game. It played into the Star ship troopers' theme hard, and people picked up on that, they continue to play into other pop culture elements which is appealing to people. I mean just go look at the steam community page for HD2, it is a never-ending stream of memes and sht posts. But marathon has none of the charm or identity that HD2 offers. The neon puke "Runners" that walk everywhere do not have the same appeal or ability to create a community.

I mean people had to convince them to add proximity chat in the game, how is a community supposed to organically form within the game if just talking to other players was not even a consideration at the start.

It is entering a niche market when people have already had their fill of games of this genre.

I am 100% certain Marathon will not last, the HZD game has even less of a chance.
None of the spin off titles in the Horizon universe have succeeded. People like HZD because it's a single-player story driven RPG with Alloy. That's it. The extended world of HZD beyond the adventures of Alloy is just not that interesting.
