Hi,

After my 5th (!!!) swopout of my marconi router, I decided that i would rather pay for a new router, than have all the hassle with this telkom (ADSL Pots) Router. The reasons for swopping were lightning damage in two cases, and the router simple froze on another 3 occasions. That is apart from the fact that the modem/router freezes every other day, and has to be restarted. The last one was when I tried to upgrade the software, and it had an error in the middle of the process.

I hunted for a supplier of the netgear DG834 in SA, and had delivery in 4 hours from a company in Randburg at a price of R1250+vat. Installation was so simple, all I had to do was enter my adsl username and password, the rest was auto-detect. Port forwarding worked the first time I tried it. And it does my DynDNS.org update automatically. I havent had a single disconnection or reset for 7 days now.

In short, I am sold on the netgear.

Can you explain this to me, as on my Zyzel 650R-31 I see the same feature.

I host a gaming server on my machine from time to time. But my machine does not log onto the internet, my modem/router does. So therefore in order to run the server on my machine I forward the relevant ports to my machine.

That works fine, but now the problem is that every time I connect to telkom aDSL, they change my IP (165.165.x.x). That means that the people that play on my server with need to contact me to get the current IP, which is obviously non-sensical. In order to present them with a url-link, I use a free service from www.dyndns.org called dynamic DNS. You register a link there, and then get a domain name from them. The modem updates the IP of your internet connection to dyndns.org every time it changes, thus you have a domain name that you can use which automatically directs you to the current IP adress.

Once you have configured it all, you in effect forget about it. In effect this renders Telkom's idea of changing the IP frequently useless. Telkom blocked www.dyndns.org completely from use by ADSL customers a couple of months ago, but sheer pressure resulted in them removing the block within a couple of days.
 
TP so what you saying is the DG834 actually does the update ?
I wonder if my DG814 has that.
In my case I run DirectUpdate on my server to do this.
 
Hi Pro, AFAIK the 814 does it as well. And yes, the DG834 actually does the update. I have been running without a single disconnect for 2 weeks now, something that was unheard of with the telkom router.

We used to use DirectUpdate at the office too, but the built-in update on the 814 works fine too. One less process running on the server can only be a good thing.

I am having issues with my Telkom POTS router (Marconi). I, like you, game online and particularly want to be able to host Warcraft III games on DSL. When I was using dial-up with Internet Connection Sharing, I set up the Port Mapping just fine, by routing any TCP and UDP traffic coming in on port 6112 to my internal IP address.

I've tried duplicating that mapping in the PAT section of the Marconi router config and it doesn't seem to do anything. I've heard rumours that the Marconi has a built-in firewall that may prevent this type of server hosting altogether. Could you run game servers with your old Marconi router?

I would appreciate any help you can offer. Also, were did you get the NetGear DG834 from? I might have to get one if the Marconi can't route internally.

My apologies, havent visited MyADSL for a while. Fistly, phone duxbury for a supplier in your area if you want to buy one. I would prefer not to advertise by revealing the person that supplied me.

Secondly, initially I connected with my PC, and not with my router, when I used my Marconi router to host gaming. So port forwarding was not an issue. However, I had frequent disconnects using this setup, so I was eventually forced to use the router to connect to the internet. I never got hosting a server to work when using the marconi router to connect instead of the PC. This was only solved once I switched to Netgear.

The router still works exceptionally well, and I still recommend it to anyone that is a new entrant or existing user of ADSL. Even Telkom have started to support it, where they have previously refused to help me when they find out that I am not using their router.
