If someone started as a Junior Developer in the beginning of 2007 and had 4 years experience up until now what would their salary be? +- What would the high, low and average end of the spectrum be?

What are salaries of friends you know with 4 years experience?

Just got a few 'flyers' from a recruitment agency (even though I'm not really interested in the field...).

With a proper degree: ~ 35-45k
Without: ~ 25k (though I'm not as certain about this one)

How difficult is Java programming?

EDIT: Now that I've asked this ...

How difficult is other high-level programming languages? If you know ... name a few and compare it if you can.

The problem you will find getting into java development is not the actual language.. but getting employers to let you get over your 1st yr. Kinda a problem in general though.

Get over your first year?? What do you mean by that?

Developing code at a university and corporate environment is different, not everyone adapts fast or likes it either. In IT in particular you find that companies prefer people to have worked through that phase and worked out their kinks (in code). I find it silly though because if you adapt quickly you often find and spot the dead weights in organisations rather than becoming one yourself. I dunno maybe in the last 3-5yrs? businesses trust graduates less or something -shrug-. After just 1 year of dev in a general language(java, c++) you are infinitely more employable than a grad without experience.

25 without a degree…..
I’m going to start with Java programing, how difficult can it be :-D

That's what agencies say but I don't think you will get that hey. There is no industry standard, according to some agency that wanted to rip me off. In what area is that salary of 40k though?

Is there a decent scale somewhere? how much should a developer in C get with x amount of experience, java with x amount of experience?

Good luck getting 1st recognizable job/at a decent place. Entry level java dev goes for about 12k on avg and that's with bsc it degree most of the time + lots of competition for those posts.
